Ogun State government has confirmed the death of a Lassa Fever patient, prompting the declaration of Lassa fever outbreak in the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker announced this to journalists in Abeokuta.

Dr Coker explained that the index case was a 25-year-old female National Youth Corps member who fell sick in Ondo state and was brought to a secondary health facility in Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State on the 18th March 2025, but later died same day.

She said the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Rapid Response Team at Ijebu North East had continued to keep the situation under control.

The Commissioner advised all public and private health facilities in the state to step up Infection Prevention and Control measures and enforce compliance among all health workers.

Dr Coker  implored residents to promptly report to the hospital if they noticed any  symptom of lassa fever, advising that every case of feverish illness that did not respond to 48 hours use of anti-malaria or antibiotics should be handled as an index of suspicion for Lassa fever.

She reaffirmed the State’s Government dedication to protecting the health of  citizens through continuous surveillance and prompt response to infectious diseases.
