The Standard Organisation of Nigeria, SON, has solicited the continued support and collaboration of every Nigerian in ridding the country of fake and sub-standard products and services, towards improving and safe-guarding lives.
The Director-general of the Organisation, Dr Ifeanyi Okeke, in a message to the commemoration of this year’s World Standards Day, organised by the Ogun State Region of SON, comprising Ota, Sagamu and Abeokuta Offices, held in Sagamu, lamented the adverse effects of sub-standard goods and services on people’s living conditions particularly, the health.
Represented by the State Regional Director, Mr Omoniyi Omotosho, Dr Okeke who emphasized that standardization and quality assurance required a strong partnership of relevant stakeholders, appealed to manufacturers in the country to ensure their products conform with both National and International standards, to promote consumer confidence and global competitiveness of Nigerian products and services.
Speaking on the theme for this year’s commemoration: Shared Vision for a better World; Spotlight on SDG17: Partners for the goals, the SON Director General pointed out that, it focused on a shared framework that would enable meaningful collaboration across industries, governments, and organizations to achieve common objectives on standardization and quality assurance.

Dr Okeke noted that the International day of Standards apart from being an opportunity to honour and encourage standards development organizations for their pro-activeness, aimed to raise awareness among regulators, industries and consumers on the importance of standardization to the global economy.

He advised Nigerians to always patronise standard products and services, as well as report suspicious sharp practices by manufacturers to relevant authorities for prompt actions.
Earlier, the host and Coordinator of Ogun 2 Office, Sagamu, Mr Moshood Shittu who said the event was aimed at raising the awareness of people of the state on the dangers of using substandard products and services in their daily activities, urged manufacturers to get the necessary certifications from appropriate authorities to enhance their productions.

Highlight of the event had in attendance representatives of various companies in Ogun state, a road show to some strategic places in Sagamu, including Oba Erinwole Road, Awolowo market, Akarigbo road and Sabo market, where residents were addressed and sensitized in the three major languages of Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa, on the need to be vigilant about products and services, to guard against falling victims of sub-standard products with their hard earned money.
