The media play a crucial role in engendering good governance in the country.
A member of House of Representatives, Mr Fola Oyekunle stated this at 2025 Press Week Award ceremony held at the Studio One Broadcasting House, Dugbe Ibadan.
Mr Oyekunle noted that journalists could continually hold leaders accountable to the people.
While congratulating FRCN Ibadan Union Chapel Members for their week, Mr Oyekunle enjoined journalists to continue their role as watchdog in the society.
The Zonal Director, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Ibadan Zonal, Mr Dominic Mokikan, represented by the Deputy Director programme, Reverend Niyi Dahunsi said Media practitioners as the fourth estate of the realm, should set the standard for political leaders in the country to follow to reposition the country in the right direction.
Also the Chairman, Lagelu Local Government Council, Mr Kamourudeen Mudashiru said Journalists through their reportage could determine the peace and progress of any nation, hence the need for them to live up to their professional standards.
While congratulating the leadership of FRCN Ibadan chapel for the week, three Chairmanship candidates contesting for the position of Oyo State NUJ Chairman, Mr Akeem Abas, Mr Adebayo Raji and Sola Oladapo urged the staff to come out en masse for the forthcoming state election to vote for a credible leader of their choice in the state.
They added that the election should not be seen as a do-or-die affair.
In their separate goodwill messages, Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Oyo State, Mr Ademola Babalola enjoined all the contestants to embrace peace.
On her part, the Chairperson, Nigerian Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Mrs Omolola Alamu, while congratulating the Leadership of the Union for the week, described it as an annual programme, pledged to support the chapel in moving the Union forward.
Earlier in his welcome address, Chairman, FRCN Ibadan Chapel of the NUJ, Mr Oluwakayode Banjo said the Corporation holds the strongest biggest and most vibrant chapel.
He advised members to continue to uphold both the ethics of the profession to the core, and the standard of FRCN known for setting the pace.
He noted that the award would not only motivate the awardees to do more but would challenge other notable Nigerians to work towards the development of their host communities and the country as a whole.
