Queues Reappear at Filling Stations as Petrol Price Hits N1,080

By Rotimi Famakin

There are indications that motorists in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, may find it difficult to purchase fuel in the coming days.

This follows an unexpected hike in the price of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, popularly known as petrol, as many filling stations allegedly shut their gates despite having the product.

Our correspondent who monitored the situation at Challenge, Apata, Mokola, Sango and Ojoo reports that most filling stations currently selling the product have increased the price from about eight hundred and twenty-five naira to between one thousand and five naira and one thousand and twenty naira per litre.

It was also observed that several filling stations were not dispensing fuel to customers as their entry and exit points were either locked or opened without fuel attendants attending to motorists.

However according to our correspondent, the situation has resulted in panic buying, as the few stations selling the product witnessed long queues of vehicles despite the price increase.

A motorist, Mr Felix Dairo, attributed the hike to possible disagreements between oil marketers and the Dangote Refinery, or the impact of the ongoing tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran.

Mr Dairo appealed to the Federal Government to urgently intervene and prevent a fresh fuel crisis in the country, which had earlier been eased following the removal of fuel subsidy.
