The Nigeria Police force, Oyo command has foiled a highway robbery attempt along the Ogbomoso–Ilorin Expressway, leading to the arrest of a thirty-two-year-old suspect.
The operation, carried out by a joint team of police operatives and local vigilantes, disrupted a gang of armed robbers who had blocked the highway at Egbeda Village to hijack a diesel tanker.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka in a statement confirmed that the hoodlums had already dispossessed the tanker driver and his assistants of their valuables before the security team arrived.
DSP Olayinka said a gun duel followed as the suspects attempted to flee, resulting in the capture of one suspect, identified as Dere Yahaya.
He, however, said other members of the gang managed to escape into the nearby bush with gunshot wounds.
The Command’s PPRO noted that the Police and vigilante groups are currently conducting an intensive search of the area to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
He added that the Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, praised the bravery of the officers and the support of local security partners.
