Suspect in Ogun corps member death not our member – NMCN

By Oluwatoyin Adegoke

Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, NMCN, has refuted claims that Kehinde Adesanya, a suspect linked to the death of a corps member in Abeokuta, is a nurse, describing the individual as an unregistered practitioner and a quack.

In a press statement by the Ogun State Nursing and Midwifery Committee Chairman, Dr Serifat Aminu, on behalf of NMCN, led by its Registrar, Dr Ndagi Al-Hassan, the Committee said its investigation showed that the suspect was not recognised by the Council to practise nursing in Ogun State or anywhere in Nigeria.

Dr Aminu explained that the Committee reviewed available records and carried out necessary verification in line with its regulatory mandate before arriving at the conclusion that the individual was neither licensed nor registered with the Council.

She noted that describing such a person as a nurse was misleading and undermined the credibility and professional standards of the nursing profession which required proper training, certification and adherence to ethical codes.

The Chairman said the incident underscored growing concerns over the activities of unqualified persons posing as healthcare professionals and endangering the lives of unsuspecting members of the public.

Dr Aminu therefore warned members of the public against patronising unqualified practitioners, noting that doing so could lead to serious health complications and avoidable loss of lives.

She urged residents to always verify the credentials of healthcare providers and seek medical attention only from recognised and accredited health facilities while also encouraging the public to report suspected cases of quackery to relevant authorities.

The Committee assured that it would continue to collaborate with government agencies to identify, apprehend and prosecute individuals engaging in illegal medical practice.
