OGWAMA Goes Tough on Waste Offenders

By Oluwatoyin Adegoke

The Ogun State Waste Management Authority, OGWAMA, has arrested and prosecuted one hundred and eight waste offenders in Abeokuta.

The offenders were apprehended by the OGWAMA enforcement team in different parts of the state capital for dumping refuse on roadsides, public places and medians, contrary to the state waste management law.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on OGWAMA, Alhaji Farook  Akintunde, said the offenders were prosecuted in customary courts within the state capital and fined to serve as a deterrent.

Alhaji Akintunde described the development as unfortunate, noting that despite sustained sensitisation and provision of waste collection services, some residents still engage in indiscriminate dumping.

He urged residents to make use of approved Private Sector Participants assigned to their areas for proper waste disposal, warned that indiscriminate waste disposal poses environmental and health risks, including flooding and groundwater contamination, especially during the rainy season.

The Special Adviser reaffirmed the government’s resolve to sustain enforcement and called on residents to comply with environmental regulations or face prosecution.
