The Ogun State Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, is investigating two men over the alleged trafficking of their underage daughters to Libya for child labour.
The State Commander, Mrs Abosede Jimoh, made this known in a statement issued to journalists in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Mrs Jimoh said the suspects, Akinsanya Oladimeji, 55 and Kehinde Rasheed, 45, were believed to be friends and allegedly trafficked their 15-year-old daughters, Adeola Akinsanya and Rokibat Adeyemi, through the desert to Libya in 2024.
Mrs Jimoh explained that the girls were received in the North African country by Afusat Akinsanya, wife of one of the suspects and mother of Adeola.
She added that Rasheed, a widower, later claimed that in February 2025, Afusat informed him that his daughter, Rokibat, had died due to illness.
The commander stated that Rasheed allegedly attempted to conceal the death until pressure from his late wife’s family, who demanded the whereabouts of the girl, forced him to admit to the incident.
She said the family reported the matter to the police, leading to the arrest of the two suspects and the transfer of the case to NAPTIP for further investigation.
Jimoh noted that investigations were ongoing to ensure the suspects were held accountable, while efforts are being made to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death and secure the safe return of the second victim still in Libya.
