There is the need to prioritize Town planning for habitable and control of natural disaster through professional and accredited Town Planners in the Country.
The Chairperson of the Association of Women Town Planners, Oyo State Wing, Dr Olaide Oladiran stated this while receiving Award of Excellence during the Annual Appreciation Day of the News and Current Affairs Department, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Ibadan, held at the Broadcasting House, Dugbe, Ibadan, Oyo State.
She also called for the adoption of sustainable, organised, as well as, secure approaches to physical development.
Dr Oladiran said, failure of some governments and individuals to patronize the expertise of the Association which is a professional body of trained Town Planners, have resulted into buildings and structures collapse which has claimed some lives and waste of millions of naira.
“I want to advise residents to always consult professionals before embarking on building projects. Some people do overlook professional consultation. Many have purchased land to build residential buildings in Commercial Areas, if this is done, one could end up having issues because they failed to consult experts” Dr Oladiran added.
Dr Oladiran observed that unplanned communities are prone to natural disasters such as flooding, environmental degradation and a host of others.
She encouraged Nigerians to cultivate the habit of adhering to master plans of their environment for a healthy and improved living standard.
