Malaria in Pregnancy: Experts Advise Early Antenatal Care

By Fasilat Lawal & Rotimi Famakin

A consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Dr Olusola Aworinde, has advised expectant mothers to register early for antenatal care and attend regular clinic sessions to receive proper medical attention for malaria.

Dr Aworinde gave the advice while speaking with Radio Nigeria in Ibadan to mark this year’s World Malaria Day.

The medical expert noted that malaria requires specialised care during pregnancy, as reduced immunity makes expectant mothers more vulnerable to severe complications such as anaemia, miscarriage, stillbirth, and low birth weight.

In the same vein, the Oyo State Malaria Programme Manager, Mrs Foluke Adeyemo, who urged residents to visit health centres for proper testing and diagnosis whenever they experience symptoms such as fever, cautioned against self-medication and the use of unverified alternative treatments.

Mrs Adeyemo commended the Oyo State Government and the Ministry of Health for their efforts in strengthening healthcare delivery, particularly through the deployment of skilled medical personnel and the rehabilitation of health facilities.
