Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved the payment of 13-month salary to the state workers for the seventh year running.

The governor has also approved the payment of outstanding salaries and minimum wage arrears to staff of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso.

The governor stated this while inaugurating the Governing Board of the Teaching Hospital at the Executive Chambers of the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

He gave an assurance to resolve the issue of LAUTECH lecturers embarking on strike soon.

Governor Makinde equally tasked the newly inaugurated Governing Board to revamp the Oyo Annex of the Teaching Hospital within 12 months, promising that the state government would give necessary support to the board to make the facility operational.

“You have been selected or nominated based on merit. The Chairman of the Governing Board, Professor Banji Oyelaran-Oyeyinka, is an accomplished individual. He has been everywhere, and a lot of people, associations and organisations are looking for him. So thank you, Prof, for agreeing to serve your state.

“Prof has developed a roadmap, and he has asked me when can we sit down and agree on this so that he can start implementation.

“Also, I have been trying to see Prof. Ayodeji Omole, Chairman of LAUTECH Governing Council, for a while now because I have been reading about the lecturers either going on strike or not going on strike. I haven’t really taken a deeper dive into what is going on in there. So, I hope in the next one or two days we will be able to see what is going on.

“When I came to LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, I made a promise about the issues around the minimum wage arrears, and all of that. And a lot of your people have been asking ‘what’s the situation because we haven’t received the alert?’ Let me explain. I made that pronouncement and I expected it to be implemented, but they came back and said, ‘Well, we have to follow due process.’ I am happy to report that just this morning, I signed the salary file for the December salary and the 13th month salary. All those arrears were included.

“So they should rest assured. I can also announce here that just like we did last year, and just like we have been doing since 2019, there will be 13th month salaries as well.”

Speaking on behalf of the Governing Board, the Chairman, Professor Oyelaran-Oyeyinka, thanked the governor for the opportunity to serve and assured of the board’s readiness to complement government efforts with policies that would transform the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital to a world-class facility.

Retirees in Ogun State have described the current Contributory Pension Scheme, CPS, as an unfriendly policy that does not meet their expectations.

The retirees, who staged a peaceful protest at the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, carried placards with inscriptions such as “Mr Governor, Please Save Our Souls,” “No to CPS,” and “CPS is Killing, Give Us DBS.”

Speaking on behalf of the aggrieved pensioners, Mr. Daniel Akanji said those who retired from the state service in July 2025 were facing severe financial hardship under the scheme, alleged that government had failed to meet its obligations, including non-remittance of almost 18 years of their deductions into the scheme.

The protesters appealed to the state government to disengage the policy or suspend it entirely, noting that past administrations had delayed similar policies in the interest of workers’ welfare.

They lamented that the current scheme had brought untold hardship, with many retirees unable to meet basic family, health and daily needs.

Responding, the Permanent Secretary, Bureau of State Pensions, Mrs. Arinola Adetayo, said all issues relating to the Contributory Pension Scheme had been addressed, noting that retirees were already benefiting from the state government’s palliatives.

Mrs. Adetayo added that arrears of CPS deductions, including returns on investment, were being paid into retirees’ Retirement Savings Accounts, RSA, for those who had submitted the required documents.

The Chairman, Federal Civil Service Commission, Professor Tunji Olaopa, has admonished public servants not to see training opportunities as a jamboree, but as avenues to build capacity and improve their organisations’ productivity.

Professor Olaopa stated this while delivering a lecture at the 2025 Public Service Week, titled “Institutional Reforms for Inclusive and Responsive Public Service,” organised by the National Forum of Heads of Federal Government Establishments (NAFOHEADS), Oyo State Chapter, at the Federal Secretariat, Ikolaba, Ibadan.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Oyo State Ministry of Establishment and Training, Mr. Hameed Bello, Professor Olaopa noted that the public service would only become efficient when recipients of training programmes were held accountable by their organisations to demonstrate areas where their capacities have been enhanced.

Professor Olaopa also charged public servants not to depend solely on training sponsored by their organisations, but to pursue self-sponsored capacity development to remain relevant and justify the salaries they receive.

He further urged government at all levels to adequately fund the training of public servants, describing them as the catalysts that drive the wheel of every administration.

In his welcome address, the Chairman, NAFOHEADS, Oyo State Chapter, Dr. Stephen Adewuni, appreciated members for their support and appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde to assist in the provision of a bus to convey workers to and from their various homes at subsidised rates.

Dr. Adewuni also appealed to heads of federal establishments in the state to participate actively in NAFOHEADS activities to maintain a vibrant and robust forum.

Among the participants was the Deputy Director, Programmes, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria ,FRCN, Ibadan, Reverend Niyi Dahunsi, who commended the forum for sustaining the annual engagement for public servants.

Ahead of the forthcoming election of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Oyo State Council, the Zonal Director, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Ibadan Zonal station, Mr Dominic Mokikan, has called on the chairmanship candidate on the platform of “Great Minds”,  Mr Akeem Abas, to uphold the truth and be magnanimous if elected.

Mr Mokikan stated this while receiving Mr Abas and his campaign team at the conference room of the Broadcasting House, Radio Nigeria, Dugbe, Ibadan.

The Zonal Director said the failure of past leaders of the union to see election in a simple way had led to conflict and selfishness.

“Be magnanimous in victory and be gracious in defeat. This is the way the union should be. If there is no gracious in defeat, it will lead to acrimony and if there is no magnanimity in victory it will lead to winners takes it all.”

In his reaction, Mr Abas said he is contesting for the position of Oyo NUJ chairman to rid the union of junks and restore professionalism.

He noted that members of his team were carefully selected, having examined their level of professionalism, character and the media organisations they work for.

Mr Abas had earlier at the Studio One of the Broadcasting House, pledged to prioritize the welfare of members through subsidized food items and training of members on Artificial intelligence, AI which he said was capable of rendering media professionals jobless in the future if not considered.

He maintained that the union would hold a joint press week annually with two days set aside for National Association of Women Journalist, NAWOJ, and Sports Writers Association, SWAN.

Commenting on the agenda of the team, the Campaign Director General of the Great Minds team, Mr Lekan Shobowale said his team would preserve the legacy of NUJ, end junk journalism, and also ensure the welfare of members.

The Deputy Director, News and Current Affairs Department, FRCN, Ibadan Zonal Station, Mr Adewumi Faniran urged the chairmanship candidate to restore the lost standard that the journalism profession is known for.

“Let sanity prevail. If your team is fortunate to come on board, make sure you sanitise the union. The era of impersonation should be made a thing of the past.”

The Head of Department, Corporate Development and Communication, FRCN, Ibadan Zonal Station, Mr Steven Agbaje said the Great Minds team possesses great manifestos, which he said would help the union to attain the desired standard position in the comity of unions in the state.

One of the candidates contesting for the secretary of the union, who is also a staff of FRCN, Ibadan Zonal station, Mr Dayo Adu pledged to contribute meaningfully towards achieving the mandate of the great mind team.

While commending the corporation for the opportunity he had leveraged to progress further in his journalism career, Mr Adu appealed for full support of staff members to enable his team win the forthcoming election.

The Oyo NUJ election comes up on December 9, 2025.

Mr. Adekunle, who said the call became imperative to avoid degradation or job loss, described it as uncivilized for a union leader to unilaterally call for a strike for over seven months with the excuse of insecurity.

This was announced in a circular issued after an emergency National Executive Council meeting on Saturday, September 27, 2025, and signed by General Secretary Lumumba Okugbawa.

PENGASSAN directed members in field locations to down tools from Sunday, and ordered a total nationwide shutdown across offices, companies, institutions, and agencies from Monday.

“All PENGASSAN members working across field locations are to withdraw services effective 06:00hrs on Sunday, 28 September 2025 and commence 24-hour prayers. This includes all control room operations, panel operations, and outfield personnel,” the union said.

“All PENGASSAN members across all offices, companies, institutions, and agencies should withdraw all services effective 00:01 on Monday, 29th of September, 2025.

“All processes that involve gas and crude supply to Dangote Refinery should be let off effectively immediately,

“All IOC branches must ramp down gas production and supply to Dangote Refinery and petrochemicals.”

According to the circular, the union announced 24-hour prayer vigils and appealed for government intervention, declaring that the strike will continue until the dismissed workers are reinstated.

Pensioners from the 33 local government areas of Oyo State on Thursday, held a rally of gratitude to Governor Seyi Makinde for improving their welfare with the implementation of their various demands.

The rally, held at the state secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan was the same spot the senior citizens once protested against government neglect, marking a symbolic shift from years of agitation to appreciation.

Prior to the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde, members of Nigeria Union of Pensioners had taken to the streets in frustration, decrying the failure of then governors to address their plights.

Their demands for timely pension payments, gratuities, and better living conditions were often met with silence or unfulfilled promises.

For many years, the senior citizens staged series of protest, condemning what they described as the government’s lip service to their suffering.

The union took legal action to compel one of the then state governors to honour their demands, but the struggle persisted.

However, under the administration of Governor Makinde, the pensioners said that they have seen a remarkable change.

The most important was the implementation of twenty five thousand naira as minimum pension, which began in January , 2025, coupled with regular payment of monthly pensions.

Many of them expressed joy that, for the first time in years, they could afford basic necessities without the fear of unpaid pensions.

Speaking at the rally, the state secretary of Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Comrade Olusegun Abatan, commended the governor for prioritizing the welfare of retirees, as the state pensioners are now the highest paid in the country.

Reading his address titled “Resurrected Pensioners in Oyo State Appreciate Engineer Seyi Makinde”, Comrade Abatan noted that while the battle for improved pension benefits had been long and exhausting, Governor Makinde’s policies had brought relief and dignity to senior citizens in the state.

“We know all bucks stop on your table and because we know that you are kind, humane, and compassionate to the Pensioners, my letter to you struck the humanity in you resulting in your approval that the least paid Pensioners in Oyo State should now earn ₦25,000 per month. You did not stop there, you directed that all pension increases since 2007 be factored into the pensions of affected Pensioners culminating in an unprecedented increase in pensions of our members. This increase is unprecedented in the annals of pension review in Oyo State and the first of its kind in the whole of the Federation. To our members, the pension increase is like a thunderbolt, many of us are still dazed about the review”.

Addressing the pensioners, Governor Makinde, reaffirmed his commitment to the well-being of retirees and assured them that his administration would not relent in ensuring that pensioners receive their dues promptly.

Speaking through his deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal, Governor Makinde added that sacrifices of pensioners in building the state would never be forgotten.

He equally called on other labour unions to always channel demands through appropriate quarters for prompt consideration and approval.

Pensioners at the rally pledged their continued support for the state government.

Retirement is meant to be a time of rest and reflection, a reward for decades of hard work of Pensioners.

However, for pensioners under Nigeria’s Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), it has become a period of endless waiting, financial hardship, and unfulfilled promises.

The CPS, introduced in 2004 to replace the Defined Benefit Scheme, was designed to ensure a seamless retirement for workers through a contributory system managed by Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs).

However, for many retirees, the delays in the payment of monthly pensions have turned the system into a source of anguish.

Endless Waiting, Mounting Hardship

For many pensioners, the monthly pension is their primary source of income.

The delays, often lasting months, have created a cascade of challenges.

Essential needs like food, housing, and medical care have become unaffordable luxuries.

The rising cost of living in Nigeria has only worsened their plights.

Inflation has pushed the prices of basic goods and services to record highs, leaving retirees unable to meet their daily needs.

Some have resorted to borrowing or relying on family members for support, while others have reportedly lost their lives due to an inability to afford life-saving medical care.

Why the Delays Persist

Several factors have been identified as the root causes of the delays. Chief among them is the failure of some employers, particularly state governments, to remit contributions promptly.

This has created backlogs that disrupt the flow of funds into pension accounts.

Administrative inefficiencies within PFAs and the cumbersome processes required to access pensions also exacerbate the situation.

Retirees are often forced to navigate bureaucratic hurdles, with errors in documentation and record verification delaying payments further.

Demands for Urgent Reform

Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Contributory Pension Scheme Sector has been at the forefront of calls for reform.

The union has also called for an upward review of pensions to reflect the economic realities of inflation and rising living costs.

The plights of pensioners under the CPS raises serious questions about Nigeria’s commitment to the welfare of its senior citizens.

Retirement should be a period of dignity and comfort, but for many, it has become a struggle for survival.

Experts agreed that systemic reforms are essential to restore confidence in the CPS.

This includes resolving payment delays and also ensuring that retirees can access their funds without unnecessary stress.

One thing is that the welfare of pensioners must become a priority.

Their years of service to the nation deserve more than broken promises and delayed payments.

For now, the voices of pensioners echo a simple plea, which is to live out their retirement in peace and dignity, free from the burdens of a system that was meant to protect them.

President of the Nigeria labour Congress, NLC, Mr Joe Ajaero wants government to dialogue with the union on the tax reform bill, to enable its members make their inputs.

Mr Ajaero made this known at the NLC secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, during a dialogue on the tax reform bill organised by the NLC Central Working Committee and inauguration of ten Compressed Natural Gas, CNG buses donated by the union to the South West.

The NLC president observed that some aspects of the tax reform bill needed clarifications from government for better understanding.

“I will implore everybody to read and understand what is imbedded in the tax reform bill, I think it’s all over the internet now on google and social media. Also as a matter of fact, federal government did not include NLC in dialogue of the bill”.

Mr Ajaero also implored members of the public to endeavor to go through the tax reform bill to prevent misinterpretation which could trigger misinformation.

Earlier in a lecture, a Professor of Accounting and Financial Development, Godwin Oyedokun explained that the tax reform bill needed to be understood by Nigerians to avoid misinterpretation.

Professor Oyedokun maintained that tax was inevitable and must be embraced by all for the development of any country.

“Rejection of the tax reform bill by the labour unions in the country would not solve the issues of double taxation or high percentage deduction on Personal Income Tax. I will call on federal government to invest more on infrastructural development as a way of improving the standard of living of average citizens”.

Professor Oyedokun, however, encouraged Nigerians to acquaint themselves with the benefits of the tax bill.

While inaugurating the ten CNG buses, Oyo state Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde applauded NLC for the gesture.

Represented by the Deputy governor, Chief Bayo Lawal, the governor called on NLC to get more of the CNG buses for the use of workers and people of the state.
