Osun State House of Assembly has again cautioned commercial banks operating in the state against processing unauthorised financial transactions on local governments’ accounts.

This is contained in a letter signed by the Speaker, of the State House to Assembly, Prince Adewale Egbedun and made available to newsmen in Osogbo.

Prince Egbedun described as “illegal and unconstitutional” financial instructions allegedly emanating from some local governments including Boluwaduro Local Government, authorising deductions of up to 15 percent of the September 2025 allocations in favour of private individuals.

He emphasized that such actions lacked legal backing and budgetary approval and are in clear violation of the Osun State Public Financial Management Law, 2020, and other statutory regulations.

“Treasurers are not legally recognised signatories to Local Government accounts under extant laws. Only the Local Government Chairman and the Director of Administration and General Services (DAGS), both officers of the Local Government Service Commission, are legally empowered to operate these accounts.”

The Speaker emphasized that no withdrawals or deductions could be made from local governments’ accounts without strict adherence to the Constitution, internal financial guidelines, and approved budgets.

“Any bank that processes such unauthorised instructions would be held complicit in financial misconduct, in contravention of several national laws, including: The Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Act, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) Act,and the Criminal Code Act.”

Prince Egbedun added that severe consequences awaited any institution found culpable, including summons before the House, issuance of arrest warrants, referral to anti-corruption agencies, blacklisting of the bank and recommendation for removal of government patronage.

The National Assembly has unsealed the office of the Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

According to reports, her office, located in Suite 2.05 of the Senate Wing, was unsealed on Tuesday morning by the Sergeant-at-Arms of the National Assembly, assisted by security personnel.

The office had been under lock and key since March 6, 2025, when the senator was suspended from the Red Chamber.

In a video shared on Tuesday, the Deputy Director of the Sergeant-at-Arms, Alabi Adedeji, was seen removing the red seal on the office door.

“I, Alabi Adedeji, Deputy Director, Sergeant-at-Arms, hereby unseal the office. The office is hereby unsealed. Thank you,” he said in the video.

The embattled lawmaker was, in March, handed a six-month suspension by the Senate, which also barred her from participating in all activities of the 10th Senate over alleged misconduct during her protest against the reassignment of her seat by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on February 20.

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension ended in September 2025, but she was unable to resume duties due to ongoing legal disputes and opposition from the Senate leadership.

On July 4, the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled that the suspension was excessive and unconstitutional.

The senator had written to the upper chamber to notify it of her intention to resume duties after the expiration of her suspension, but the National Assembly rejected her request.

It is, however, unclear whether the development grants the lawmaker full access to her office and the premises of the National Assembly, as the Senate is yet to issue a resolution on the matter.

It also yet unknown whether the embattled senator will resume with her colleagues when the Senate reconvenes for plenary in October.

The National Assembly has formally rejected the Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s plan to resume legislative duties.

The assembly stated that her six-month suspension remains in force pending the outcome of a Court of Appeal case instituted against the Senate by Akpoti-Uduaghan.

In a letter issued by the Acting Clerk to the National Assembly, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, dated September 4, 2025, the Senate acknowledged Akpoti-Uduaghan’s notification of her intended return on September 4, the date she claimed marked the end of her suspension.

However, the Senate clarified that her suspension took effect on March 6, 2025, and emphasised that the matter is still subjudice.

The Senate insisted that no administrative action can be taken until the Court of Appeal delivers a verdict.

The letter stated that the Senate would only review her suspension after the court’s pronouncement.

“The matter remains sub judice, and until the judicial process is concluded, no administrative action can be taken to facilitate your resumption,” the letter read in parts.

PUNCH Online reports that Akpoti-Uduaghan, said she will return to the National Assembly later this month after completing her six-month suspension, according to her lawyer.

Speaking with The PUNCH in Abuja, her counsel, Victor Giwa, disclosed that the senator was on vacation in London but had already made plans to resume plenary alongside her colleagues when the Senate reconvenes on September 23.

Recall that Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended in March 2025 following a Senate resolution.Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended on March 6, 2025, following allegations of insubordination after she rejected a change of her designated seat during plenary.

The suspension, based on recommendations of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, also stripped her of aides, office privileges, and salaries.

The lawmaker had consistently argued that her ordeal was linked to her petition accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment, a claim the Senate dismissed.

She later challenged her suspension in court, securing a judgment she said favoured her recall.

The Oyo State House of Assembly, OYHA, has dismissed the petition written against the management of the Oyo State Pacesetter Transport Service (PTS) by the Association of Sacked Supervendors and Investors

The recommendation for the dismissal of the petition was contained in a report presented before the House during the plenary presided over by the Speaker, Mr Adebo Ogundoyin.

Reading the report, the Chairman, House Standing Committee on Transport, Mr. Babajide Adebayo, recommended that the petition be dismissed on the ground of lack of merit and substantive evidence.

Clarifying the incident that led to the petition written by the Chairman of the Association, Mr. Adebayo, disclosed that the Committee discovered illegal activities, collusion and fraud between the vendors and the drivers, which led to the termination of the appointment of the vendors.

Before the introduction and implementation of the card payment system to streamline transactions, the company faced leakages in revenue with average daily income reportedly around two hundred thousand naira (N200, 000:00). Following the introduction of the card payment system, the revenue increased to two million naira (N2,000,000:00) on the first day.

The engagement of vendors to monitor card reader machines and prohibit cash payments initially reduced the leakages. However, the vendors’ collusion with drivers on fare collection in cash led to further fraud, which prompted the company to terminate their contracts.”

Mr Adebayo said that the Committee also discovered that it is the Pacesetter Transport Service that is responsible for the payment of pensions and gratuities of its retirees and staff salaries.

The lawmaker maintained that it discovered that the activities of PTS are in line with guidelines of its operations and are subject to the approval of the state Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde.

He recommended that “the Executive Arm of Government be urged, through SAFER Program, to increase the subvention to the Pacesetter Transport Services (PTS) to support its subsidised service to citizens of the State.

“The petition submitted by Mr. Ibrahim Asiwaju Chairman, Association of Sacked Supervendors and Investors Oyo State Pacesetter Transport Services (PTS) to the House be dismissed for lacking in merit and credible evidence, the use of vendors system for revenue generation be terminated due to misconducts and the terms of engagement of contract staff be redefined regarding period of engagement and other conditions of service.

“The Management of Pacesetter Transport Services be urged to restructure its workforce and those who have been found guilty of misconduct and have been suspended more than twice. The Management of PTS be urged to design and implement a well-structured organogram that clearly defines reporting lines, job roles and responsibilities of all personnel. This will help eliminate ambiguity, prevent role duplication, and enhance overall productivity in the Pacesetter Transport Services; and the Pacesetter Transport Service (PTS) be urged to operate strictly in accordance with its conditions of service,” Mr. Babajide Adebayo said.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Tajudeen Abbas, has withdrawn a bill that aimed to make voting mandatory for all eligible Nigerians.

The bill, which he co-sponsored with Daniel Asama Ago, was meant to change the Electoral Act 2022 to encourage more people to vote and strengthen democracy.

In a statement on Monday, his media aide, Musa Krishi, said the decision to pull the bill came after speaking with many people and groups across the country.

From the start, the goal was to get more people involved in elections and strengthen democracy by boosting voter turnout,” the statement said.

The bill had passed second reading in the House on Thursday, but it sparked debate.

Some people supported it, saying it would lead to better voter turnout, while others said it would take away personal freedom and would be hard to enforce in a country as diverse as Nigeria.

Honourable Abbas, however, pointed out that countries like Australia, Belgium, and Brazil have high voter turnout thanks to compulsory voting, but stressed that Nigeria must find its way that suits its people.

“Lawmaking is about serving the people, and any new law must respect personal freedom,” Abbas said.

Instead of forcing people to vote, he said the government would now look for ways to encourage voting, especially among young people and first-time voters.

This withdrawal gives us time to talk more about how to build a culture of voluntary voting that supports our democracy and respects citizens’ rights,” he added.

The Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has declared the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly illegal and unconstitutional.

In a judgment delivered on Wednesday, Justice Yetunde Pinheiro nullified the House’s proceedings and resolutions of January that led to Obasa’s ouster.

Obasa had filed a suit against the Lagos State House of Assembly and Mojisola Meranda, who was named the new Speaker, challenging the legality of the process that resulted in his removal.

Represented by his Counsel, Chief Afolabi Fashanu, Obasa argued that the decision to remove him was taken by 36 lawmakers while the Assembly was on recess and he was out of the country.

He maintained that the session was invalid, as it was convened without his authority or a formal delegation of power, in violation of the House’s procedures.

The suit was based on nine grounds, referencing relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Standing Orders of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Ondo State House of Assembly, ODHA, has constituted an ad hoc committee to investigate issues surrounding the unpaid salaries of staff at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, RUGIPO, Owo.

The workers had recently staged a peaceful protest within the polytechnic premises, demanding the payment of their outstanding salaries and the full implementation of the national minimum wage.

During a plenary session presided over by the Speaker of the House, Mr Olamide Oladiji, the panel was given a two-week deadline to do a thorough investigation and report its findings.

The lawmaker, representing Akure South Constituency 2, Mr Steven Abitogun, would serve as chairman of the investigative committee.

The lawmakers expressed concern that RUGIPO appeared to be the only state-owned institution frequently plagued by salary issues, despite having similar funding structures to other institutions.

Meanwhile, the Ondo State assembly commenced a four-week working recess from Friday, 11th April to 15th May, 2025, to allow lawmakers attend to pressing issues within their constituencies and also observe the Easter celebration.

The Conference of Speakers of State Legislature of Nigeria, CSSLN, strongly condemns as horrific the lynching of 16 northern travelers who were in transit, accused of possessing Dane guns (local firearms).

It would be recalled that these individuals were tragically killed by a mob in Uromi, Edo State, on Friday, March 28, 2025.

The Conference, in a press statement signed by its Chairman, Mr Adebo Ogundoyin, said the action of the so-called members of the Vigilance group responsible for their killing was barbaric and unjustifiable.

It decried the act of mob violence by the local security officers as a gross violation of human rights and a serious threat to peace and security.

“Such extrajudicial killings undermine the rule of law and contribute to the erosion of societal values.” “We commend the prompt response of the Edo State government and security agencies in addressing the situation, but we urge the state government to intensify efforts to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are swiftly identified, arrested, and prosecuted in accordance with the law”, the statement noted.

Furthermore, the Conference called for proper and rigorous oversight of the community policing structures established by various state governments.

“It is essential to ensure that these local security operatives operate with professionalism, respect for human rights, and in line with the rule of law. Effective oversight will safeguard the integrity of these initiatives and ensure they do not become instruments of injustice. Our hearts go out to the families of the deceased. We extend our deepest condolences during this time of grief and stand with them in their loss”, the statement added.
