Omuo Violence: Ekiti Traditional Rulers Sue For Peace

The Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers, has appealed to politicians in the state to sustain the peace and stop bloodletting as witnessed in Omuo Ekiti during the last Saturday’s bye-election for Ekiti East Constituency One.

The Alawe of Ilawe Ekiti and Chairman of the State Traditional Council, Oba Ajibade Alabi made the appeal while addressing newsmen in Ilawe Ekiti.

He urged people of Ekiti State to play politics without bitterness and killing.

The monarch stressed that Ekiti could not afford to become a theatre of war because of any election.

The chairman, Council of Obas noted the gruesome killings that took place during the election were unnecessary and condemnable.

He commiserated with the families of the deceased, praying God to grant them the fortitude to bear the losses. 

The Alawe advised security agents to prosecute those arrested in connection with the killings in Omuo Ekiti, urging the people of the community to remain calm and maintain peace.

Fayemi Advises Traditional Rulers to Avoid Inflammatory Utterances

Traditional rulers in Ekiti state have been advised to shun utterances capable of causing ethnic rivalry and violence among their subjects to ensure peace in the state.

Governor Kayode Fayemi gave the advice today while swearing ceremony of the new chairman of the reconstituted council of Traditional Rulers in Ekiti state, the Alawe of Ilawe Ekiti, Oba Adebanji Alabi.

The Governor who expressed concern over the comments of some royal fathers on the appointment of the new chairman, noted that the emergence of Alawe was done in compliance with the chieftaincy law of Ekiti state.

Governor Fayemi who urged the new chairman of the Council of Obas to unite members, stressed the need for traditional rulers to assist government to promote peace in their communities since they remain the custodian of culture and traditions.

Earlier, the Chairman Ekiti State Chieftancy Review Committee and Deputy Governor Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi said government action was in line with the constitution and asked other royal fathers to support the chairman. 

Responding, the chairman of the reconstituted council of traditional rulers and Alawe of Ilawe Oba Adebanji Alabi promised to unite members of the council and support the present administration.

Radio Nigeria correspondent report that some notable first class monarchs were absent at the ceremony, having approached the Ekiti state High Court to challenge the appointment of Oba Adebanji Alabi as the chairman of Council of Traditional Rulers in Ekiti state.
