Amotekun Uncovers Ammunitions Abandoned in Forest

As part of efforts to curb kidnapping, the Oyo State chapter of the Southwest Security Network, codenamed Amotekun has uncovered four AK rifles, military camouflages and about sixty rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, alleged to have been abandoned by kidnappers operating in an undisclosed forest in the State.

Speaking with newsmen at the state headquarters of the Corp, Moniya, Ibadan, the Commandant of the Corp, Colonel Olayinka Olayanju, Retired explained that the men of the command have been combing the forests in some parts of the state following the recent abductions of passengers along the Lagos/Ibadan expressway.

He said efforts of his men paid off last weekend when the items were discovered in one of the forests after a tip-off that some gunmen were cited in one of the undisclosed forests.

The Amotekun boss explained that officers of the security network were still on ground in the forests with a view to nabbing the criminal elements.

Also, Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Security Matters, CP Fatai Owoseni, Retired, said the State Governor had given marching order that security agents in the state be proactive in stemming the tide of kidnapping. 

He said collaboration with local elements such as hunters and vigilantes assisted greatly in the recent success achieved by the agents in the state.

The Oyo State Special Adviser on security matters added that the state government would ensure that necessary equipment needed for the smooth operation of the Corp be made available to enhance optimal performance

Other items unrecovered were wraps of Cannabis, raincoat and two Nigerian Army caps and one beret.

Paramilitary, Religious, Socio-Cultural Organisations Back Amotekun Corps Bill

Paramilitary Organisations, Religious groups and Socio-Cultural Associations including the Odua People’s Congress, OPC, the Agbekoya, Miyyeti Allah, Vigilante Group of Nigeria as well as Hunters Associations of Nigeria have presented different memorandum at a public hearing on Oyo State Security Network Agency Bill.  

Our correspondent report that The House of Chiefs, Secretariat, Ibadan, the venue of the programme for the bill to back Amotekun Corps, was filled with security stakeholders and members of the public.

In a welcome address, Chairman House of Assembly Committee on Security, Mr. Akeem Obadara said the security challenges in the country necessitated the inclusion of relevant stakeholders at the grassroots, hence all hands must be on deck to ensure crimes are curbed. 

Speaking on behalf of the Speaker, Mr Adebo Ogundoyin, the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Abiodun Fadeyi explained that Amotekun Corps when in operation will not undermine the activities of existing security agencies as offenders will be handed over to the police for prosecution. 

Special Adviser to the Governor of Oyo State on security, Mr. Fatai Owoseni who allayed the fears of some ethnic group, explained that the proposed bill, when passed to law, will not witch hunt any ethnic or religious groups when operational. 

In a presentation, Representative of the Nigerian Police, Oyo State Command, SP Oluwabukola suggested that section 5 of the bill should be limited to the law for a private person to arrest, which is to hand over a suspect to security agencies. 

Dignitaries at the event included the representative of the Aare Ona Kakanfo, Chief Gboyega Adejumo, and Governor, Odua People’s Congress, Mr. Rotimi Olumo.
