The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria says its members are working towards developing indigenous vaccines against the Novel SARS-COV 2 and other infectious diseases.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the association’s Special General meeting, the National President, Professor Garba Damen solicited the federal government’s support for adequate funding and laboratory infrastructure to make the local vaccines possible.

Professor Damen also called on the government to employ medical laboratory scientists at port health services across Nigeria to support the disease surveillance response and activities across the nation’s port.

He explained that the nation cannot effectively fight pandemics if the country depends on the importation of all diagnostic tools and relegate its in-country research and development efforts.

The medical laboratory scientists’ national president while commending the appointment of Dr Ifedayo Adetifa as the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, applauded President Muhammadu Buhari for approving nine hundred and fifty million naira intervention fund for the establishment of Molecular Laboratories in all Federal Tertiary Hospitals.

Professor Damen expressed optimism that the building and equipment at the laboratories will tremendously help in mitigating the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic as well as that of other infectious diseases.

He said infectious diseases will continue to re-emerge at National and sub-national levels, urging medical laboratories to continue to reinvent policies and practices that will effectively anticipate outbreaks to contain them early.

The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) Oyo State branch says it is building healthy Nigerians through its services.

The chairman, Oyo State chapter of the association, Mr Idowu Akinbola stated this during a courtesy visit to Radio Nigeria Ibadan. 

Mr Akinbola noted that the visit became necessary to create awareness on the need for patients to go for medical test before going for treatment.

He explained that the association played a very crucial role in the assessment of wellness and identification of diseases.

Responding, the Acting Zonal Director of Radio Nigeria, Ibadan Zonal Station, Mrs Bolanle Owoyemi assured the body of proper support through adequate dissemination of health information and also increased awareness about health education.

Mrs Owoyemi enjoined the body to make sure that existing privately-owned laboratory was accredited.

The Presiding Judge, National Industrial Court, Ibadan, Justice J. D Peters has ordered the management of Ladoke Akintola Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, to immediately grant autonomy to Medical Laboratory Scientists in the hospital and separate it from other professionals.

The court’s order sequel to a suit filed by the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso Chapter, against the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Oyo State, Commissioner for Health, LAUTECH Teaching Hospital Management Board, Chief Medical Director, LAUTECH Teaching Hospital and four others seeking for the establishment of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science in the hospital.

Declaring the judgment, Justice Peters noted that it was not appropriate to put various professional together and expect them to perform optimally.

The judge said members of the Association of Medical Laboratories Scientists were professionals and qualified to operate as directorate without any outside intervention.

He therefore ordered that the service of Laboratory Science should be recognized as Directorate and be separated from other departments in the area of duties and administration.

The court also declared that the claimant should not be victimized for the suit.
