Local vigilantes in Afijio Local Government Area of Oyo State have foiled a kidnap attempt, arrested two suspects, and recovered arms.

According to our correspondent, the proactive efforts of members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, VGN, saved a man, whose name was withheld, from being abducted at gunpoint from his village home near Awe.

It was gathered that upon hearing gunshots from the scene of the attempted abduction in the early hours of Monday, a vigilante operative living nearby promptly mobilised other members of the group to confront the assailants.

According to VGN, Oyo State Operations Officer, Mr Oyekola Olaoye, the suspected bandits had earlier failed in an attempt to kill a man identified as ”Domoso” within the same locality but succeeded in carting away his new Honda motorcycle.

Mr Olaoye said preliminary interrogation by the VGN, identified the suspects as Muhammadu Tairu and Seriki, adding that they have been handed over to the Department of State Services, DSS, in Ibadan for further investigation.

Meanwhile, VGN Oyo State Commander, Comrade Sunday Olajide, assured that, the third suspect would soon be apprehended through synergy with other security agencies. He urged residents to continue supporting efforts to combat insecurity.

Afijio Local Government Area, particularly Akinmorin, Awe, Jobele, and Ilora, had recorded a series of kidnapping incidents, which triggered a public protest in the area last month.
