The Magistrates Association of Nigeria has sought the amendment of Section 318 of the 1999 Constitution to include their members as judicial officers to better their condition of service.

This call followed a difficult working condition of magistrates in the country despite their heavy work load in handling 80% of cases in courts.

This is contained in the association’s submission at the ongoing House of Representatives Public Hearing on Constitution Review taking place in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The magistrates’ position was signed by the National President of the association, Saidu Safiyanu Umar and the National General Secretary, Chukwuemeka Nweke and it was delivered before the federal lawmakers by Chief Magistrate Tope Aladejana of Ondo State Judiciary.

They expressed deep sadness that many of them used to engage commercial motorcyclists popularly known as Okada riders to get to work courts while working conditions in their courts nationwide were not conducive.

The magistrates pointed out that if such an amendment was made, their condition of service and remuneration would improve tremendously across the country.

House of Representatives says it will upon resumption of plenary next month prioritise the Electoral Act (amendment) Bill, the Constitution Amendment, and the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill (PIGB), among other all-important legislations.

Spokesman of the House, Mr Benjamin Kalu said this while hailing President Muhammadu Buhari for signing into law the Companies and Allied Matters Act (amendment) Bill CAMA.

In a statement, Mr Kalu said the presidential assent came as a result of the resolve of both chambers of the 9th National Assembly to facilitate the ease of doing business in Nigerian.

He said the final ascent into law marks a key milestone in the fulfillment of the legislative agenda of the House under the leadership of Mr Femi Gbajabiamila and was attributable to the harmonious working relationship between the Legislature and the Executive.

Mr. Kalu added that the nation’s economy remains a priority for the 9th House and in the same manner with which it swiftly and diligently passed the Finance Act, the Deep Offshore Sharing Formula Act, and the revised Appropriation Act 2020, the House will continue to deploy strategic legislative interventions to improve governance and make the business environment more accommodating.
