Governments at all levels have been urged to work with the relevant stakeholders to introduce stringent measures that will protect the environment from plastic pollution.

This formed the submission of speakers in Abeokuta on the occasion of World Consumers Right Day.

The Director of advocacy, Consumer Protection Advocacy Initiative, Mr. Ola Animashaun said the challenge of plastic pollution would be addressed if there were the right policies and enforcement mechanism in place.

Mr. Animashaun who described the plastic crisis as a global concern said there was the need for stakeholders to rise to the challenge and save Nigeria from plastic pollution.

Mr. Animashaun who noted that waste collection infrastructure was insufficient implored researchers to come up with more environment – friendly initiatives to outrightly phase out single-use plastics from the country.

Also, the chairman, board of trustees of the Consumer Protection Advocacy Initiative, Mr. David Ajayi said the covid 19 pandemic had added to the rise of single use plastics including face masks, gloves and food packaging.

Mr Ajayi maintained that there was the need to engage consumers, civil society and policy makers in the country to tackle plastic pollution together with great vigour.

In their separate contributions, two veteran broadcasters, Mr Biodun Bello and Mr Dele Ayoodo said the campaign against plastic pollution should be taken to the rural areas, where majority of the residents, had continued to use the items in ignorance.
