Makinde Commissions Awotan Landfill Project

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has commissioned the Awotan Landfill Project and also unveiled the Clean and Green Waste Trucks to improve environmental and social well-being of residents of the state.

Speaking at the official commissioning of the Awotan Landfill and unveiling of Clean and Green Waste Trucks, held at the Awotan Landfill, Akufo Road, Awotan, Ibadan, Governor Makinde said the project would provide job opportunities for self-reliance to 3,000 residents of the community.

He also pledged to fix the Awotan Health Centre for the community to have access to qualitative healthcare delivery.

The governor lauded the immense contribution of late former Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mr Kehinde Ayoola, and the present Commissioner, Dr Idowu Oyeleke in making the project a reality.

Governor Makinde maintained that the success of the landfill project has led to the creation of massive job opportunities as according to him, 500 private companies have been registered for refuse collection, with each of them expected to recruit at least six people including drivers and refuse packers. 

Earlier, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Dr Idowu Oyeleke said the landfill project was a crucial part of the broad plan to reposition Oyo State, especially the state capital, Ibadan as a sustainable and ideal metropolitan city free from dirt and filth. 

Dr Oyeleke appealed to all house owners and facility owners, either private, commercial or industrial in Oyo State to complement the effort of the state government by promptly paying waste bills in order to achieve a safe, clean and healthy environment.

In a remark, the Alawotan of Awotan, Oba Dauda Omotosho appreciated Governor Makinde for making life more meaningful to all the residents of the Awotan community.

Poverty Alleviation: Oyo Govt, World Bank Release 76 Million Naira

Oyo State Government has disbursed a sum of about Seventy-Six Million naira to eighteen communities and two vulnerable groups under its World Bank-Assisted programme.

The money disbursed through the Oyo State Community and Social Development Agency, OYCSDA, would be spent on education, water, transportation, socio-economic, environment and health sectors in each community. 

The Chairman, Oyo State Community and Social Development Agency, OYCSDA, Dr Idowu Oyeleke said this during a day training for Community Project Management Committee, CPMC, and presentation of cheques to various communities in Ibadan. 

Presenting cheques to the beneficiaries, Dr Oyeleke pointed out that the community and Social Development Project was one of the areas of collaboration between the state government and World Bank to reduce poverty through community participation in service delivery.

He also pledged the commitment of Engineer Seyi Makinde’s administration towards the implementation of life-impacting programmes in line with the cardinal objectives of good governance.

Dr Oyeleke said that all the micro-projects were expected to be completed within two months, amidst adequate monitoring and maintenance by the stakeholders.

In their responses, the benefiting communities were full of appreciation to the present administration in the state for bringing development to their doorsteps through the agency.
