Osun State governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, cast his vote on Saturday in the local government elections going on across the state.

The governor, who arrived at his polling unit in Sagba/Abogunde Ward 2, Unit 9, Ede, was accredited before exercising his civic duty.

The election, which is expected to determine the leadership at the grassroots level, has witnessed a significant turnout of voters amidst tight security and electoral monitoring.

Speaking with newsmen shortly after casting his vote, Governor Adeleke urged all eligible voters to exercise their franchise peacefully.He emphasized the importance of grassroots democracy and called on the people to participate actively without fear or intimidation.

The governor who described the election process seamless, commended the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, OSSIEC, for a job well done, encouraging all and sundry to come out and vote peacefully, as this is a crucial step in strengthening the nation’s democracy at the local level.

Osun State House of Assembly has lifted the suspension order placed on the caretaker chairman of Ede South LG, Mr Lukman Afolabi.

This was contained in a statement made available to journalists by the Chief Press Secretary, CPS, to the Speaker, Mr Olamide Tiamiyu.

According to him, the decision was taken during the parliamentary meeting of the Legislators after reviewing the investigation conducted on Mr Afolabi.

Given this, the Speaker, Mr Adewale Egbedun, recalled the Caretaker Chairman of Ede South LG, Mr Lukman Afolabi to resume office with immediate effect.

Prince Egbedun advised Mr Afolabi to be more focused in the discharge of his duties, as the House of Assembly pledged to continue to play its supervisory role of ensuring prompt and adequate dispensation of the dividend of democracy to the people.

Five suspected gunmen have been arrested after they launched an attack on a residence around the Arulogun area of Ede in Osun State killing two people.  

Account of residents of Arulogun area of Ede confirmed that about 30 gunmen invaded the area to attack a house belonging to one Wakili Olayiwola around 5:00 AM on Thursday.

One the residents of the community, who identified himself as Leke, told Radio Nigeria that the gunmen got to the house and started to fire bullets on the building for some minutes, following which they razed the car belonging to the house owner.

Leke explained that in the course of the attack, a police team arrived at the scene and engaged the gunmen in a gun battle which made them flee the scene.

Some of them were reportedly arrested while others escaped with bullet wounds. 

Confirming the incident in a telephone interview with Radio Nigeria, Osun State police Command spokesperson, Mrs Yemisi Opalola said five of the gunmen were arrested at the scene of the crime. 

She said the police got a distress call from an impeccable source in Ede community on an attack on a building. 

She stated that the Commissioner of Police, Mr Olawale Olokode led a team to the scene and on sighting the armed police team.

 The gunmen attempted to escape but were given a hot chase to the Bode area, where they were overpowered as some of them escaped with gun wound and five arrested.

She gave the names of the gunmen as Suleiman Babatunde (39yrs) Saka Taofeek (35yrs) Raimi Saheed (21yrs), Akinloye Quwiyu (23yrs) and Sadio Alatise (25yrs). 

Mrs Opalola said the hoodlums had already killed two people; Rilwan Kareem (23yrs) of Oke Bode area Ede and one Taofeek (21yrs) of Arunlogun area Ede before the police arrived.

She said one single barrel gun, one dane gun, eight expended cartridges, axes, cutlasses, criminal charms and five motorcycles were recovered from the scene, while 48 rounds of AK 47 ammunition were expended in the repelling operation.

The police spokesperson hinted that an investigation into the incidence was ongoing as the commissioner of police vowed to arrest all the escapees and ensure that they all face the wrath of the law.
