The police have deployed its officers on the Abuja-Kaduna road to stop a resurgence of kidnappings along the road.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun said he increased the deployment of police officers and security equipment that will leverage on advanced technology and strategic resources to bolster the overall security infrastructure along the route.

The IGP, who directed the DIG Operations, DIG Ede Ayuba Ekpeji, to strictly supervise the personnel detailed for operations along the route, restated that proactive steps to keep citizens and travellers safe have been taken.

A statement issued on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said ”In response to the growing concerns regarding security along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has implemented robust measures to enhance safety and security in the region

“The Inspector-General of Police while emphasizing the collaboration between various security agencies and concerned communities in the region, urges the public to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activities, and cooperate with security personnel as the collective effort is crucial in maintaining the security and well-being of all residents and travellers.

“He assures the public that these strengthened security measures are part of an ongoing commitment to ensuring a secure and peaceful environment.”

A robbery incident occurred on Long Bridge, near Warewa bus stop, inward the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in the early hours of Wednesday.

According to the report, one of the passengers in the buses plying the road at the time, named Abayomi said that many motorists ran away and abandoned their vehicles.

” There was a robbery and because of the robbery, people out of fear began to run. Some people hit the cars of others. Someone is lying on the ground lifeless, and we heard that someone was killed,” he said.

 “We were not able to move close, buses were turning back. The police have come there now, but it took a while before they came,” he said.

Confirming the incident, the Divisional Police Officer at the Warewa Police Station, Abdulfathai Ogunsanya said, “My men are at the scene of the crime now. We have not got any comprehensive report so we cannot tell you whether someone was killed or not.”

Giving more information a few minutes later, Ogunsanya said,” I just spoke to the officer on the scene. He said that nobody died. A vehicle was shattered and the person involved is in the hospital receiving treatment as we speak.”

President Muhammadu Buhari is currently in Ogun State on a working visit

On arrival, the President performed the inauguration of the Ijebu/Ode-Mojoda-Epe Expressway amidst tight security.

According to our correspondent, the highway had been closed to traffic and guarded by the heavy presence of Men and officers of the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police, the Federal Road Safety Corps and other paramilitary agencies.

An array of dignitaries, including Royal fathers, Political leaders, government functionaries, captains of industries and religious leaders are also present to grace the occasion..

School pupils and representatives of various organizations and interest groups as well as community development associations are also on the ground for the epoch-making event. . Popular musicians and entertainers are also dishing it out to the admiration of the people.

Ogun state government says it will not condone any haphazard physical development along the Abeokuta-Sagamu expressway.

The Commissioner, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr Tunji Odunlami stated this in Abeokuta, during a meeting with owners of shanties and illegal shops erected along Presidential Boulevard, Oke-Mosan near Governor’s office.

Mr Odunlami who was represented by the Acting General Manager Planning and Development Permit Authority, Mr Kolawole Ogun, said the present administration would not allow indiscriminate erection of structures on setbacks, capable of distorting layout of the area.

He noted that the Agency would not relent in its sensitisation and enforcement drive, towards ensuring that developers build right by obtaining necessary approvals at every stage of their building projects.

A truck loaded with soft drinks early this morning rammed into one of the buildings of Saint Michael’s Primary School, Wema Junction at Apata end of Ibadan-Abeokuta Expressway. 

Witnesses told Radio Nigeria that the driver of the truck, which was coming from the Oluyole Estate area of Ibadan blamed the accident on brake failure.

The accident has resulted into gridlock as road users were having a hectic time negotiating the small available space on the road.

As of the time of filing this report, Traffic Officers from the Nigeria Police Force, Federal Road Safety Corps, and Oyo state Road Transport Management Agency are controlling the traffic and diverting motorists to alternative routes.
