The Federal Government has flagged off a nationwide awareness and free cancer screening programme in Abeokuta, urging Nigerians to take advantage of the initiative for early detection and treatment of cancer.

The Minister of State for Health and Social Development, Dr Iziaq Salako who declared the Programme open at the Federal Medical Centre Idi-Aba advised Nigerians to take responsibility for their health by avoiding unhealthy diets, alcohol and tobacco consumption, unsafe sexual practices and sedentary lifestyles.

Dr Salako said about six thousand persons with cervical, breast and prostate cancers across the six geopolitical zones of the country would have access to screening and treatment under the programme.

The minister also said that the Federal Government would establish ultramodern cancer centres across the country and one would be located at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, as part of long-term plans for cancer prevention, management and control.

In the same vein, Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker, called on traditional rulers and community leaders to mobilise residents to take advantage of the intervention, noting that early detection and prompt treatment could save lives.

In separate remarks, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, the wife of a former president, Mrs Bola Obasanjo and the President of the Nigeria Cancer Society, Mr Abidemi Omonisi, encouraged individuals that testing positive should not be viewed as a death sentence, emphasizing the need to seek early treatment.

Earlier, the Medical Director of FMC, Abeokuta, Professor Sarah Ibiyemi had affirmed the hospital’s readiness to deploy adequate resources and manpower towards ensuring the successful implementation of the programme.

The Acting Head of the Audit Department, Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Idi Aba, Abeokuta, Mr Oluwaseun Adeniyi has reportedly committed suicide by jumping into a well in the Obantoko area of Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Head of Public Relations and Communication, FMC Abeokuta, Mr Segun Orisajo, who confirmed the incident expressed the Management’s condolences to the family of the deceased and the FMC Abeokuta Community, describing the deceased as a dedicated and hardworking member of staff.

Mr Orisajo explained that the incident occurred shortly after the late Adeniyi had dinner with his family.

He said the motive behind this tragic act remained unclear, adding that the deceased allegedly had a previous record of mental health challenges.

The head of Public Relations and Communication, FMC said the management of the centre used the opportunity to call for the need to increase awareness and resources for mental health support.

Patients at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta have appealed to the Federal government to fast track the implementation of the agreement reached with residents’ doctors to avoid another strike.

They made the call while speaking with Radio Nigeria in Abeokuta on the suspension of the strike embarked upon by resident doctors

A trader, Mrs Taiwo Ajala who commended both parties for reaching a consensus  said there was the need to government to design a mechanism to avert incessant industrial action in the health sector.

Mrs Ajani who described the striking period as devastating said the residents doctors had been attending to patients.

Also, a commercial driver, Mr Idowu Tanimola who brought his relative said he was pleased with the resumption of the doctors.

Radio Nigeria correspondent who visited the tertiary institution reports that normal medical and health care services have resumed.

The Medical Director, Federal Medical Centre,  Professor Adewale Musa-Olomu who also monitored the resumption of duty by the doctors expressed satisfaction with the latest development.
