The Supreme Court of Nigeria has sworn in 11 new justices.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who conducted the ceremony charged the judges not to allow their ambition to cloud their sense of judgement.

Speaking further at the swearing-in held at the main courtroom of the Supreme Court, the CJN told the new justices to be prepared for criticism.

Some of the Justices are Jummai Hannatu Sankey, Chidiebere Nwaoma Uwa, Chioma Egondu Nwosu-Iheme, Haruna Simon Tsammani and  Moore Aseimo A. Adumein.

Others are Obande Festus Ogbuinya, Stephen Jonah Adah, Habeeb Adewale O. Abiru, Jamilu Yammama Tukur, Abubakar Sadiq Umar, and Mohammed Baba Idris.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola will administer the oath of office to the newly appointed nine Justices of the Court of Appeal on Wednesday.

The event is billed to be held at the main court auditorium of the Supreme Court.

According to a statement on Sunday by the Director of Press and Information of the court, Dr. Akande Festus, the justices are Hannatu Laja-Balogun from Kaduna State, who was appointed a High Court Judge on May 24, 1999; Binta Zubairu from Kaduna State appointed a High Court Judge on October 31, 2001; and Peter Chudi Obiora from Anambra State, who was sworn-in as High Court Judge on January 17, 2005, respectively.

Others are Justices Okon Efreti Abang from Akwa Ibom State, who was appointed a High Court Judge on 22nd June 2009; Asma’u Mainoma from Federal Capital Territory appointed High Court Judge on February 1_ 2013; Lateef A Ganiyu from Oyo State, who became High Court Judge on June 26, 2014; and Jane Iyang from Cross River State, who was sworn-in as High Court Judge on February 12, 2015.
The rest are Justices Hadiza Rabiu Shagari from Sokoto State, who got elevation to the High Court Bench on 12th February 2015; and Paul Ahmed Bassi from Borno State, appointed to the High Court on 14th July 2017, respectively, “the statement added.
Akande also said Justice Amina Augie would retire from the apex court after attaining the age of 70 years on September 21.

He said, “Justice Amina Augie will formally retire from the Supreme Court Bench on Thursday, September 21, 2023, after attaining the mandatory retirement age of 70 years on Sunday, 3rd September, 2023.“The valedictory court session in her honour was delayed because of the annual vacation of the Court which just ended on Friday, 15th September 2023.”

Justice Amina Augie was sworn in as Justice of the Supreme Court on November 7, 2016. She graduated with a Second Class Upper Division in Law from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1977 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1978. ”

The Senate has confirmed Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria.

Ariwoola was confirmed at about 12:55 after about an hour of drilling and questioning by the senate.

This motion for the screening was moved by the Senate Leader, Senator Ibrahim Gobir, at the plenary at 11:35 am.

The Senate President,  Ahmad Lawan, had called for the screening exercise to be moved forward from where it was listed on the order paper.

Gobir moved that the Senate resolve into the Committee of the Whole to conduct the screening as well as suspend its relevant rules to admit the acting CJN Ariwoola and his entourage into the chambers.

The motions were approved by the Senate after the senators by Lawan.

Thereafter, the acting CJN Ariwoola and all Justices of the Supreme Court, President of the Court of Appeal, President of the Federal High Court, President of the National Industrial Court and Secretary of the National Judicial Council walked into the chambers and took their seats.

The delegation was led by the Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters, Senator Babajide Omoworare.

A federal lawmaker representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal constituency, Oyo State, Honourable Shina Peller has congratulated Justice Olukayode Ariwoola on his swearing-in as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

Honourable Peller’s congratulatory message was contained in a statement he personally signed and shared on his verified social media platforms where he described the new CJN as an embodiment of integrity, justice, truth and the rule of law.

Moreover, the federal lawmaker expressed confidence that the tenure of Justice Ariwoola as the CJN will restore sanity to the judiciary, while he recalled that his late father, Professor Moshood Abiola Peller, once described the new CJN as a trustworthy and upright person who is ever driven by justice for all.

The statement read:

“I congratulate Justice Olukayode Ariowoola on his swearing-in as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.

“It gladdens my heart, and that of my constituents and the people of Oke-Ogun, Oyo State, to see him reach the pinnacle of his career. I must say that this is indeed a big plus for the people of Oke Ogun, Oyo state and Nigeria at large. 

“Years ago, I could remember vividly how my dad, the late Professor Moshood Abiola Peller, described him as trustworthy, upright, and just. Without mincing words, the new acting CJN is an embodiment of integrity, justice, truth and the rule of law. 

“With Justice Olukayode Ariowoola at the helm of affairs in the judiciary, it’s safe to say Nigeria’s judiciary system is back on track and there’s no doubt about his immense ability to move the Supreme Court forward. 

“The 2023 general elections are fast approaching, and many are confident that the tenure of the acting CJN will restore sanity to the judiciary.
