Ondo State House of Assembly says it has received over 10 petitions on cases of land grabbing and forceful entry.

The speaker Mr Olamide Oladiji disclosed the plenary.

Mr Oladiji said despite that the House passed the anti-land grabbing law on December 24 and was signed by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the activities of land grabbers have been on the rise.

To this effect, the House in a resolution read by the speaker set up an eight-man committee to investigate the petitions received and report to the House in two weeks.

The Committee members are:  Mr Ololade Gbegudu as Chairman, Mr Afe Felix, Mr Moyinolorun Ogunwumiju, Mr Kolawole Ologede, Mrs Fayemi Obayelu, Mr Raymond Oluwatoyin, Mr Japhet Oluwatoyin will be members while Mr Adeyeku Richard is the Secretary.

The House also seek the formation of a special task force that will work with law enforcement agents to curtail the activities of the miscreants.

The House also agreed that the anti-land grabbing law passed by the House should be gazetted by the Ministry of Justice while adequate punishment be meted out to offenders.

The lawmakers added that there must be adequate sensitization and orientation of citizens on the existence of the anti-land grabbing law.

In another development, the speaker dissolved all standing committees of the House.

The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, OGHA, Mr Oludaisi Elemide, announced that the Assembly has passed 11 bills into law and endorsed over 42 resolutions to promote peace, order, and good governance in the state within the past year.

Speaking at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, during an interactive session with journalists, Mr Elemide revealed that the legislature received more than 90 petitions, with most concerning land-grabbing activities across various constituencies.

He noted that the Assembly had passed the anti-land grabbing bill, which the governor has signed into law.

The OGHA speaker then urged security agencies to intensify efforts in prosecuting offenders.

Stressing the importance of collaboration among government arms, Mr Elemide highlighted how the strong relationship between the legislature and the executive has fostered democratic growth and state development.

He commended fellow lawmakers for their support and referenced Sections 91 and 92 of the Nigerian Constitution, which empower the House to appoint its leadership for effective legislative operations.

Addressing recent leadership disputes, Mr Elemide confirmed that the case involving the former Speaker had been resolved in court the previous Tuesday, 21st of January, 2025, restoring normalcy to the Assembly.

Ogun State House of Assembly has charged various heads of security formations in the State to strengthen their operations by collaborating with local security networks including vigilante service, so safe corps, and other stakeholders on security.

Speaker, Mr Olakunle Oluomo gave the charge during a plenary session held at Oke Mosan while responding to the submissions of the members representing Odeda, Ogun Waterside, Remo North and Ijebu North State Constituencies.

Mr Oluomo added that there was a need to evolve more collaborative strategies at tackling local crimes and criminalities, including kidnapping and land-grabbing with a view to ensuring effective security networks in protecting the lives and property of all the residents in the State.

He also called on the new State Commissioner of Police, Mr Abiodun Alamutu to live up to his promise of curbing the excesses of land grabbers across the State, noting that the 10th Assembly under his leadership would consider a review of some sections of the Anti-Kidnapping and Land Grabbing Law, 2016 for more effectiveness.   

The lawmakers had earlier during personal explanation lamented the rising spate of insecurity occasioned by recurring cases of kidnapping in some parts of the State.
