An Osogbo Chief Magistrate Court has ordered the remand of no fewer than 16 persons suspected to be political thugs at Ilesa Correctional Centre for allegedly attacking the convoy of the Deputy Governor of the state Mr Benedict Alabi.

The presiding Magistrate, Mr Olusola Aluko said that the accused be kept behind the bar, pending when their formal bail application is filed by their legal representatives.

The prosecutor, Mr John Idoko told the Court that the accused threw stones and other dangerous materials at the convoy of the Deputy Governor of the state, Benedict Alabi, damaging some vehicles in the entourage.

The suspects docked included  Ayobami Hammed, 25; Kareem Jamiu, 27; Yusuf Babatunde, 20; Ismail Taiwo, 20; Emmanuel Monday, 28; Bankole Sunday, 24; Raji Wasiu, 25; Babatunde Nurudeen, 31; and Adediran Morenikeji, 25 among others.

The suspects were said to have committed the offence on May 23, 2022, when the state governor, Gboyega Oyetola; his deputy, Alabi; chieftains of the ruling All Progressives Congress and a crowd of party supporters visited Gbongan, the headquarters of Ayedaade Local Government Area of the state for election campaign.

The suspects, were alleged to have armed themselves with dangerous weapons and took over the Ife/Ibadan Expressway in the town, where they reportedly attacked some travellers after the campaign in Gbongan.

Members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Osun State Correspondents’ Chapel, were reportedly not spared as their vehicle was also attacked by the thugs.

The charge brought against them read : that “Ayobami Hammed, Kareem Jamiu, Yusuf Babatunde, Ismail Taiwo, Emmanuel Monday, Bankole Sunday, Raji Wasiu, Babatunde Nurudeen, Adediran Morenikeji, Olateju Olayemi, Lawal Victor, Aderemi Segun, Idris Olajide, Akimdoyin Ifeoluwa, Olanrewaju Femi, and Nurudeen Sulaiman and others now at large, on the May 23  day of May, 2022 at about 3:45pm at Ife/lbadan Expressway, Gbongan, Osun State, in the Osogbo Magisterial District, did conspire amongst yourselves to commit felony to wit unlawful assembly and threatening violence and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.

“You (defendants) did with intent to carry out common purpose, unlawfully assembled yourselves in such a manner as to cause persons in the neighbourhood to fear or panic and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 70 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.

The police prosecutor, Mr John Idoko, urged the court to remand the defendants on the ground of the sensitivity of the matter.

The Magistrate, Mr Olusola Aluko asked the defence counsels to approach the court with a formal bail application and ordered that the defendants should be remanded in Ilesa Correctional Centre.

An Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court has remanded four teenagers at correctional home for alleged ritual murder of a twenty year-old Sofiat Okeowo.

The police had charged twenty years old Balogun Mustakeem, eighteen years old Majekodunmi Soliudeen, nineteen years old Abdulgafar Lukman, and eighteen years old Waris Oladeinde, on a two- count charge of conspiracy and murder of the deseased.

Magistrate  Abudu, who did not take the plea of the accused, ordered that they be remanded in the correctional home..

Magistrate Abudu ordered that the suspects should be remanded in Oba correctional service, pending Legal advice from Ogun State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

She, however, adjourned the case till fourteenth of  March for mention.

The Prosecutor, an Inspector of Police, Mr. Lawrence Balogun, told the court that the accused committed the offence on twenty eight of January. this year at Kugba area in Abeokuta.

Mr. Balogun alleged that the accused conspired among themselves and murdered one Sofiat Okeowo who was a girl friend to one of the accused, Soliudeen.

He said the accused killed her by cutting off her head with a cutlass.

According to the prosecutor, the accused murdered  Sofiat with the plan to use her for money ritual.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened sections 324, 316 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun 2006.

An Osun State Magistrate Court sitting in Ejigbo has sentenced a man, Ebenezer Ojuawo to three years imprisonment at Ilesa correctional service.

Ojuawo was arraigned before the court on a two count charge bothering on assault and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

Prosecuting the defendant, Sergeant Olanrewaju Oke told the court that the defendant, Ebenezer Ojuawo had on the fifth of this month around Ori Eeru Ejigbo , deliberately matcheted one Adebowale Ojerinde in the head, causing him severe head injury.

He told the court that it took the intervention of the public to apprehend Ojuawo around nine in the evening the same day.

After reading the statement obtained from the defendant at the police station to the court, Ojuawo confessed through the statement that after returning from his farm, he went out to a joint where they sell alcoholic drinks, submitting that was the last thing he remembered.

Ojuawo maintained that he did not even know that he matcheted anyone.

Ojuawo however pleaded guilty to the two-count charge praying the court to temper justice with mercy.

Delivering the judgement, Magistrate, A. Ajala said the fact of the case revealed that the defendant was not insane but acted under the influence of alcohol.

The court said it was not good to keep such a person in the public noting that correctional services were equipped enough to rehabilitate such people.

The court, having found him guilty of the two-count charge convicted Ojuawo for three years imprisonment for the first charge and one month for the second charge without the option of a fine.

The court also ordered that the term be served concurrently.

A 28-year-old woman, Nifemi Ajayi has landed in trouble in Ile-Ife of Osun State for allegedly biting her neighbour’s scrotum. 

The police on Monday dragged Nifemi before an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court on one count charge of assault. 

The prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Osanyintuyi said, last week Friday at about 8:00 PM at No 21, Oke-Soda, Ile-Ife, Nifemi bite one Olayera Boluwaji on his scrotum and left side stomach, which caused him bodily harm.

He noted that the offence committed was contrary to and punishable under section 355 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.

Meanwhile, the defendant told the court that she was not guilty of the alleged offence, while her counsel, Mr Philip Fasanmoye made an oral bail application for the defendant on the most liberal term. 

However, the presiding magistrate, Mr Olusola Aluko, ordered that he should file a former bail application. 

He remanded the defendant in Ile-Ife Correctional Center and adjourned the case until November 15, 2021, for consideration of bail.

Osun State Magistrate’s Court sitting in Osogbo has ordered that a 21-year-old nursing mother, Mrs Janet Ismail, should be remanded in Ilesha Correctional Center for breaking into a shop to steal clothes.
The nursing mother who appeared in court with her newborn baby pleaded not guilty to the two-count of burglary and stealing.
The Police Prosecutor, Inspector Kayode Adeoye, informed the court that, “on March 2nd, 2021 at Orita-Elelede, Janet broke into a shop of one Olalere Iyabo Modinat and stole different types of clothes worth N300,000.
According to the prosecutor,the offences Janet committed is contrary to and punishable under section 383, 390 (9) and 413 of Criminal Code CAP 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.
The lawyer who represented the nursing mother, Mr Najite Okobe applied for the bail of the defendant in the most liberal term.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Adeoye informed the court that the clothes she stole were in the court.
The presiding magistrate, Mrs Adijat Oloyade, ordered that the defendant be remanded in Correctional Centre.
She adjourned the matter to April 12th 2021, for hearing.

A Magistrate Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun state has ordered the remand of Adenle Mujeem and Olagunju Kamilu in Ilesa correctional centre, for attempt to kill a septuagenarian, Mrs Suleiman Fatimah.

According to the charge sheet, they committed the offense on 2nd day of February 2021, at 12 :00pm at Isosu area of Ede in Osun state, in contravention of section 516,509 of criminal code cap34 vol 11 law of Osun state 2002.

Meanwhile the defendant pleaded not guilty to the court charges levelled against them by the police.

The prosecutor inspector Akintade Jacob told the court that the woman the defendants attempted to kill and steal her property, was there neighbour.

Counsel to the defendant, Sunday Abolade Ismail urged the court to grant his client bail in most liberal term, promising that they would stand their trials.

The Magistrate, Mr Ishola Omishade however, denied the accused bail and ordered that they should be reminded in Ilesa correctional centre.

He adjourned the case to 17th of this month for hearing.

Department of Public Prosecution in Oyo State has exonerated the only female among suspects alleged of kidnapping the twins of an

Ibadan based Islamic Preacher, Alhaji Taofeek Akewugbagold.

The Suspect, Rafiu Modinat is facing trial alongside six others including her husband Rafiu Mutiu for their different roles played in kidnapping the twins and collection of ransom before their release.

When the suspects were arraigned in September the court did not take their plea because of legal advice that had not been released from the Department of Public Prosecution, and ordered that the suspects be kept in the custody of Special Anti Robbery Squard, SARS.

At the resumption of the case today, the Suspect were not brought to court due to what the Police prosecutor called administrative challenge, but told the court that legal advice on the case had been released DPP.

While checking the legal advice, the Chief Magistrate Emmanuel Idowu said the female should be released from detention once the legal advice exonerated her from the case.

Chief Magistrate Idowu adjourned the case till November 23rd 2020 for mention.

Radio Nigeria also learnt that the case had already been transferred to High Court as the Magistrate Court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case.

Seven suspected political thugs arrested last week with firearms in Ose Local Government, Ondo State, have been remanded at the Nigerian Correctional Service Centre, Olokuta in Akure.

They were remanded by an Akure Magistrate Court presided over by Magistrate Tope Aladejana.

The seven suspects were arrested by security agents along Ikaro road, Ifon headquarters of Ose LGA on September 19, 2020 while parading the town with a branded campaign vehicle of Eyitayo Jegede, candidate of the People’s Democratic Party for the Ondo governorship election.

Jegede has since disowned the suspected thugs.

The Magistrate therefore ordered the suspects remanded to enable the police conclude investigations into the incident.

Ondo Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Hon. Adekola Olawoye, said prosecution of the suspects was part of the duty of any responsible government to protect its citizens under the provisions of law.

Hearing on the matter has been adjourned to October 22, 2020.

An Ibadan Chief Magistrate Court has ordered the remand of seven suspects allegedly involved in the kidnap of the twins of an Islamic Cleric Alhaji Taofeek Akewugbagold at Special Anti-robbery Squad,  Ibadan.

The suspects, who were alleged to have committed the offence on April 25 this year are Mohammed  Bashir 33, Oyeleye Opeyemi 25, Olumide Ajala 36, Taiwo Rildwan 30, Rafiu Mutiu 35, Fatai Akanji 49,  and Rafiu Modinat 29.

Arraigning the suspects, Police Prosecutor, Adegboye Olusegun said the suspects after kidnapping the twins also collected four million Naira as ransom from the father of their victims.

Facing five counts charge, the fifth defendant,  Rafiu Mutiu and sixth  defendants, Rafiu Modinat were also accused of allowing others to use their house to be used to keep the twins.

Radio Nigeria Nigeria reports that only the sixth defendant Fatai Akanji had legal representation while others had no lawyers. 

Their plea was not taken. 

The Chief Magistrate, Emmanuel Idowu therefore ordered that the suspects be kept at the Office of Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Disbelief and adjourned the case till October 12 for mention

An Osun State Magistrate Court sitting in Ile-Ife has sentenced a
35-year-old man, Maruf Ojo, to one-month in jail for stealing plantain
worth N55, 000.

The defendant was said to have stolen bunches of plantain, valued at
N55,000, belonging to one Oladipupo Sunday contrary to the criminal
Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Osanyintuyi told the court
that the defendant committed the offence at Oke-Ora village via
Ile-Ife.

His defence counsel, Mrs Tosin Omoyeni urged the magistrate to temper
justice with mercy, saying the convict was a first-time offender.

In his judgment, Magistrate Adebayo, who held that the court had
taken into account the fact that the convict was a first offender,
sentenced the convict to one-month imprisonment for theft with an
option of N1, 000 fines.

Sitting of an Osogbo magistrate court was disrupted for over thirty minutes as a 21-year-old accused person, Segun Balogun collapsed in court.

The accused person was arraigned for stealing some materials on 4th of October 2019 at Nelson Mandela Freedom Park, Osogbo.

The accused was put in the dock on a 3-count charge bothering on stealing and conspiracy and had pleaded not guilty to the charge read to him by the court clerk, before the clerk could finish reading the second offence, the accused person fainted right in the dock.

The prosecutor, Mr. Adeoye Kayode, told the court that the accused person was healthy before he was brought to the court.

The magistrate, Mrs. Risikat Olayemi ordered the accused person to be taken to the hospital for proper medication.

The case was adjourned till 14th day of October 2019.
