As residents of Osun State engaged in last-minute Christmas shopping, they have called on the government to help reduce the prices of food items and commodities.

At Atakumosa Market in Ilesa, Igbonna, Ota Efun, Oluode and Owode markets in Osogbo, there was an influx of people in and out of the markets.

A bag of foreign rice, which formally sold for #88, 000, now sells for #81,000; 25 litres of vegetable oil sells for #91,000; 25 litres of palm oil which formally sold for #48,000 now sells for #54,000.

A bag of yam flour sells for four hundred thousand, and five tubers of medium-sized yam now sell for #6500 against the former price of #4500

However, prices of items including, curry,maggi, thyme, salt, tomatoes, and bell pepper, amongst others remained constant.

An onion trader in Atakumosa Market Ilesa, Mallam Idris Muhammad, who explained that he could not remember the price of a bag of onion last year, said the current price is two hundred and eighty thousand naira.

A livestock trader in Igbonna Market, Mrs Oluwakemi Aworinde explained that the price of a foreign turkey ranges from one hundred thousand to one hundred and twenty thousand naira.

She stressed that broilers and culled-off layers according to sizes, sell between fifteen and twenty- five thousand naira.

Mrs. Aworinde, while appealing to the government to formulate policies aimed at reducing the cost of food items, called on Nigerians to embrace hard work as the new year sets in with a view to surmounting the economic situation experienced across the Nation.

Also speaking, a civil servant, Miss Korede Alao said that prices of Kiddies clothes and shoes were affordable.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has declared Wednesday 25th and Thursday 26th as Public Holiday to celebrate Christmas.

As part of efforts to eliminate illegal street trading during the festive period, the Ogun State Government has introduced “Boot Sales Markets” to address the perennial challenge in the state capital, Abeokuta.

The boot sales markets, an unconventional markets which allow seasonal traders to take advantage of the festival period to display their products and wares in the boots of their cars, vans and makeshift stalls to prospective and willing buyers in an organized, healthy and safe environment instead of selling illegally on roadsides.

The Commissioner for Environment, Mr Ola Oresanya, who announced this in Abeokuta said the markets located at the M.K.O. Abiola International Stadium Kuto and Farmers Market, Asero Abeokuta, would open from nine o’clock in the morning to four o’clock in the evening daily.

While praising seasonal traders who had taken advantage of the two markets to display and sell their wares, products, foodstuffs and other items, Mr Oresanya urged the traders to comport themselves in an orderly manner to justify the government’s decision to introduce the unconventional Car Boot Sales Markets.

He noted that the Boots Sales Markets would end on the eve of the New Year at the two venues and would reopen again in the two venues and other proposed venues in other major cities of the state during next year’s festive periods.

Some traders are counting their losses as fire gutted a section of the popular Bodija Market in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The fire started very early in the morning on Monday.

Some traders said they lost goods worth millions of naira in the incident.

The cause of the fire could not be immediately ascertained but it was gathered that the fire was eventually put out by fire fighters, traders and security guards at the market.

The Director of Operations, Oyo State Fire Service, Mr Ismail Adeleke, when contacted on the telephone, told our correspondent that the fire had been put out.

He said, ” We received a call at  5:35am and we moved to the market and put out the fire immediately.

“There was no loss of life and nobody was injured in the incident. We were informed late. We didn’t receive any call from the people in the market, it was a policeman in Yemetu area that called and we responded swiftly.”

Mr Adeleke advised residents of the state to always put safety measures in place to prevent fire outbreaks and to always call fire service immediately there is an outbreak.

Consumers in Ibadan have lamented the hike in prices of consumable commodities which they attributed to the interstate lockdown and other measures initiated by the government.

Speaking with Radio Nigeria in Ibadan two of the consumers, Mrs Mary Adubi and Mr. Bayo Adekunle explained that, the amount earlier expended on food items had increased.

They appealed to the government at all levels to proffer lasting solution to the Corona virus pandemic and ensure equitable distribution of palliatives.

On his part, a baker in Ibadan, Mr. Anthony Awoyode said prices of baking ingredients had increased drastically, thereby forcing bakers to reduce the size of bread for sale.

Mr. Awoyode however urged government to improve on economic activities so as to recover from setbacks caused by Covid-19.
