The House of Representatives bye-election, which took place in Akure South and Akure North Federal Constituency was held under a peaceful atmosphere.

Our team of correspondents who covered the election in the two local governments observed that there was no record of violence in most of the polling units visited as eligible voters conducted themselves in a peaceful manner.

They also observed that electoral officials arrived early at polling units with election materials, leading to prompt accreditation of eligible voters with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BIVAS.

Olorunferanmi Odofin reports from Oke-Aro, Ijomu, Obanla, Iro, Odopetu in Akure South that residents filed out in their numbers to exercise their franchise.

According to him, the eligible voters were in high spirit to elect their representative.

The situation was the same in Arakale, Hospital Road, Oyemekun, Ondo Road, Adesida Road and Alagbaka as reported by Isaac Afolabi who also observed the presence of personnel of the Nigerian Army, Police Force and the NSCDC in strategic locations within the Akure metropolis to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

Kayode Animasaun who covered Iju/Itaogbolu, Oba-Ile in Akure North reports that the turnout of voters in the areas was impressive.

One of those who cast their votes in Iju was the Minister of State for Niger Delta, Senator Tayo Alasoadura.

Senator Alasoadura who could not be immediately accredited with the BIVAS faulted the system saying it was capable of slowing down the voting process urging INEC to improve on the technology.

As at the time of filing this report, the results of the election was being collated.

Counting of votes is ongoing in Saturday’s bye-election into Akure South/Akure North Federal Constituency in Ondo State as voting has ended in most of the polling units.

A team of Radio Nigeria correspondents who covered the election reports that electoral officials arrived polling units early with election materials, leading to prompt accreditation of eligible voters with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BIVAS.

According to them, the exercise was generally peaceful in almost all the polling units in the two local governments.

In areas, such as Igbatoro, Ayede Ogbese, Oba Ile, Oke Aro, Isinkan, Ijomu, Obanla Odopetu, Oda, Iju/Itaogbolu among others, security personnel were seen ensuring that there was no breakdown of law and order even as residents turned out in large number to cast their ballot.

Speaking after casting his vote, the Minister of State for Niger Delta, Senator Tayo Alasoadura, however, faulted the BIVAS.

Senator Alasoadura who could not be immediately captured for accreditation with the BIVAS machine lamented that such experience would slow down the voting process and might end up denying voters the opportunity to perform their civic responsibility.
