The Minister of Interior, Mr Rauf Aregbesola has identified corruption as a major factor undermining the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS’s efforts at sanitizing the process and integrity of passport applications. 

Mr Aregbesola stated this while inaugurating a Passport Front Office in Oyo Town, Oyo State.

The minister said the newly inaugurated office was for applications and picking up of passports without bribing NIS officers for quick interventions. 

He said despite the efforts of NIS to ensure that applications of passport booklets are seamless, some bad officers were sabotaging the efforts by promising applicants an accelerated process. 

“The method they use was to lie to applicants that they were short of booklets which is a lie. We have two hundred and fifty reserved booklets in our offices”.

The minister stated further that the officers who are damaging the image of the NIS should desist or face the wrath of the law.

Mr Aregbesola said the inauguration of the Passport Front Office became imperative to reduce the burden on the Ibadan Passport Office for seamless administration. 

He said Ibadan Office has fourteen thousand unaddressed applications and there is a limit to what the Ibadan Office could do, as they could only attend to four hundred and fifty applicants daily.

On his part, the Comptroller General of Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, Mr Issah Jere who spoke through Mr Ishak Aliyu said the newly inaugurated office would boost social and economic activities in the town. 

Mr Jere, therefore, called on officers to be of good conduct and always be professional while discharging their civic rights.

Earlier, in his address of welcome, Nigeria Immigration Service Controller, Oyo State Command, Mr Mohammed Umar said the establishment of the outlet was in line with the passport reform agenda of the Minister of Interior, Mr Rauf Aregbesola to bring passport offices closer and make collection seamless for Nigerians.

He said the contributions of the host communities also added value to the realization of the passport front office in Oyo Town.

The NIS controller, therefore, urged the communities to support the Immigration Service in ensuring that the office is well-maintained and secured for the betterment of all.

Hope has risen for Nigerians living in urban areas as the Federal government has said ownership of apartments in the National Housing Estate is opened to all.

The Minister Of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fasola stated this in a message to the inauguration of the National Housing Project, phase one in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

Represented by the Director, Urban and Regional Development in the Ministry, Mr Olasunkanmi Dunmoye, the Minister said, Nigerians, including those in the diaspora will benefit from the housing scheme without discrimination, once the intending owner applied on the dedicated website and followed due process.

Mr Fasola also explained that the price of the buildings had been subsidized by the Federal government to make them affordable to Nigerians.

Inaugurating the project, President Muhammadu Buhari gave assurance of his administration’s resolve to address housing deficit in the country.

Represented by the Minister of Interior, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, President Buhari noted that many of the urban areas were overcrowded, hence the need for housing as a cardinal programme of his administration.

The President pointed out that the housing estate was an achievement of the government’s effort to make life more comfortable for people as the Micro, Small and Medium-size businesses that drive the economy were the ones who won the contracts to build the houses.

He said not only did their successful bids offered an opportunity for the companies and their employees, but through them, government had unleashed a value chain of economic activities that improved the conditions of Nigerians who benefited from sub-contracts by supplying the building materials.

The Nigeria leader commended the Osun state government for a partnership that made the housing project possible while also hoping for improved collaboration in subsequent projects.

President Buhari hinted that the housing project had provided an opportunity for the Federal government to fulfil the outstanding promise of allocating houses to members of the Super Eagles after winning the 1994 African Cup of Nation which successive governments had not redeemed.

The President’s representative, Mr Rauf Aregbesola who was the Governor of Osun State when the project commenced in 2016 advised the contractor, the would be owners and tenants to plant trees around the Estate as a measure to mitigate the challenges of Climate change for the protection of the environment.

Also speaking, Governor of Osun State, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola , represented by the state Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Mr Nathaniel Agunbiade thanked the Federal government for the housing Project.

He said the project would complement efforts of the State at providing affordable shelter for its teeming population.

In his address of welcome, the South West Zonal Director National Housing programme, Dr. M.K. Mohammed submitted that the National Housing Project was completed in line with promoting local content directive contained in the Executive Orders 3 and 5, which he said had stimulated the economy through the production and use of the materials.

The Osun National Housing project christened “Inumidun Estate” consists of 72-Housing units comprising, 24-units in a condominium (1 bedroom-4, 2bedroom-16, 3 bedroom-4), 28-units 2 (Two) Bedroom and 20-units 3 (Three) Bedroom bungalows.

Delegates of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in Osun State has returned Prince Gboyega Famodun as the Chairman of the Party in the State for another term of four years through a consensus vote.

Mr. Tajudeen Lawal, emerged as the Party’s Deputy Chairman, while Alhaja Kudirat Fakokunde returned as the leader of the Women Wing.

Also, 35-year old Akinwemimo Adegoke emerged as the Youth Leader of the party.

Announcing the results of the Congress at the Osogbo city stadium, the Chairman of the National Committee on the Osun State Congress, Mr. Gbenga Elegbeleye, said the Congress was done in line with the principles and guidelines of the Party.

Mr. Elegbeleye, who read out Article 20 of the Party’s Constitution to the delegates which provided for consensus arrangements, also announced that voice vote was adopted because of the population of the accredited delegates, which totaled 1,840.

Addressing Party Delegates after the Congress, Governor Adegboyega Oyetola reiterated his commitment to a vibrant and inclusive party in Osun state, calling on all stakeholders to follow suit.

He congratulated the new executives, charging them to rise to the occasion by promptly mending broken walls and building collapsed bridges for the good of the Party and, by extension, the State.

In his acceptance remark, the State Party Chairman-elect, Prince Gboyega Famodun called on Party members and stakeholders to channel the same energy and unity towards the primaries in February 2022 and the governorship election scheduled for July 2022.

Prince Famoodun has been the Chairman of the APC since the year 2014.

Meanwhile, in a parallel State Congress, a factional group loyal named ‘The Osun Progressives’, immediate past Secretary of the party, Alhaji Rasaq Salinsile was elected as the new APC Chairman while former Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Adelani Baderinwa, was elected State Secretary.

The Osun Progressives TOP is loyal to the Minister of Interior, Mr Rauf Aregbesola.

The Federal Government says, the the 774,000 jobs being created at the local government level is to provide a short term measure for the unemployed youth to cushion the effect of COVID-19.

The Minister of Interior, Mr Rauf Aregbesola stated this during the launch of the Extended Special Public Work Programme in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.
