Ekiti State government has disbursed gratuity checks of five hundred million naira to more than fifty-two pensioners across the state.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji, during the presentation ceremony in Ado Ekiti, reiterated his administration’s commitment to clearing the substantial backlog of gratuity debts in the state, which currently stands at over 40 billion naira.

He informed the pensioners that he has approved a monthly commitment of 200 million naira for the payment of gratuities to both state and local government pensioners, pending the time when the government will reach an agreement on the modalities to offset the full debt.

The chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NUP, in Ekiti State, Elder Joel Komolafe, expressed concerns over the outstanding gratuity debt and appealed to the governor for a concrete plan to fully clear the backlog of the gratuities.

Pensioners in Ogun State have called on the state government to pay the six four point four billion naira gratuities owed as promised by Governor Dapo Abiodun before the 2019 election.

The Ogun State Chairman of the Union, Comrade Waidi Oloyede who made this known at a media parley in Abeokuta, said the state government had also failed to implement the consequential review in pensions as also promised.

The Ogun State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NUP, also accused Governor Abiodun of continuously reneging on various promises made before the 2019 general elections.

He stated that the state government had only paid three point six billion naira out of 68 billion naira of backlog of gratuities in the last four years.

Comrade Oloyede called for the regular release of substantial funds to offset the backlog of gratuities, stating that the current economic situation of the country was not favourable to the pensioners.

Efforts to seek the reaction of the government with calls to the phone of the Secretary to the Ogun State government was not successful as the phone rang out.
