ORBDA Warns of Massive Flooding

The Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority,  ORBDA, has urged people at downstream Ogun River to be at alert over the predicted flooding associated with heavy rain in the months of September and December.

The Managing Director of ORBDA, Otunba Olufemi Odumosu in a statement advised all stakeholders to take every step necessary to mitigate the Predicted Seasonal Flooding.

Otunba Odumosu encouraged people to enlarge small and inadequate drainage systems, construct more drainages to contain excess runoff, stop using river channel as waste dumps, ensure strict enforcement of regulations banning buildings in flood-prone areas, among other measures.

According to him, ORBDA will ensure that its Water Releases are regulated without compromising the Oyan Dam integrity, and in consideration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ letter to the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, about the opening of Flood Gates of the Lagdo Dam on the Benue River in Cameroon.

FG Trains 50 Youths in Agro-Processing

As part of efforts of the federal government to bring 100 million Nigerians out of poverty, by the year 2030, fifty youths have been trained in agro-processing skills.

The participants have also been empowered with the needed equipment and cash to kick-start their businesses.

The programme, which was facilitated by the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority, had participants drawn from Osun, Ogun, Lagos and Oyo states.

In a speech, the Executive Director of Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority, Mr Oladipo Akinlade said the training was organised to stimulate small-scale crop farmers to accept new processing technology for sustainable agricultural production.

He also said the participants would be followed-up to ensure that the knowledge acquired during the two-day training was extended to other youths around them.

Declaring the workshop open, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, Otunba Olayemi Odumosu said the training in food processing techniques would go a long way at ensuring food safety and availability of food products all-round the year irrespective of the weather.

Otunba Odumosu explained further that the skill acquired would make the youths self-employed and increase the gross domestic product, GDP, of the country.

Some of the participants at the training applauded the federal government for the initiative, with a promise to utilise the materials given to them optimally.

Highlights of the programme were the distribution of pumping machines, sprayers, improved seedlings and 20 thousand naira cash to each of the participants.
