Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State has called on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmud Yakubu to reverse the declaration of Prince Dapo Abiodun as the winner of the gubernatorial election in the state held last Saturday.

 Chairman of the Party, Dr Sikirullah Ogundele while addressing a news conference in Abeokuta over the result of the election explained that the returning officer, Professor Kayode Adebowale erred in line with the Electoral act 2022 to declare the election as conclusive.

The party-state Chairman represented by the Vice chairman Mr Kayode Bamgbose noted that the electoral act had indicated that where the difference between the winner and the loser is less than the cancelled vote, the results should be inconclusive.

The party highlighted that since the APC candidate was leading with a margin of thirteen thousand nine hundred and twelve votes and with a cancelled votes of thirty-three thousand seven hundred and fifty in over a hundred polling uniit, the election should have been declared inconclusive by the returning officer.

The party called on INEC leadership to declare the election inconclusive, replace the returning officer and conduct a rerun election in the state.

People’s Democratic Party PDP in Ogun State had produced two Governorship candidates from two factional primaries held in Abeokuta ahead of the 2023 election.

The first factional primary held at the Iwe Iroyin Press Center in Abeokuta produced the former spokesperson of Atiku for president campaign team, Mr. Segun Showunmi as the candidate while the second primary held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, OOPL, produced former member of House of Representatives, Chief Ladi Adebutu.

The result of at the Press Centre revealed that Mr. Showunmi was elected candidate with 554 votes to defeat his closest rival, Mr. Ladi Lawal who scored 30 votes, while Chief Ladi Adebutu polled 15 votes.

Three Governorship aspirants battling for the PDP ticket in the state were Adebutu , Showunmi and an ex-banker, Jimi Lawal.

The result at the OOPL PDP Primary showed that Chief Ladi Adebutu won the contest with 714 votes out of the 715 accredited voters with one void vote stating that other aspirants had no vote.h

Chairman of the electoral committee that conducted the primary at the Primary producing Mr. Segun Showunmi as the candidate, Mr. Abayomi Daniel, said a total number of 778 delegates were accredited, 702 votes were cast while three votes were voided.

Also, Chief Ladi Adebutu while speaking shortly after the election called for support from stakeholders in ensuring the party defeats APC in the next Governorship election.
