The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has filed an 11-count charge bordering on conspiracy, forgery and stealing against the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo, and three others.

The charge was filed by the EFFC’s Lagos Head of Legal Monitoring Unit, Rotimi Oyedepo, at the Federal High Court, Abeokuta, Ogun State on September 1, 2022.

Count 1 of the charge read, “That you Oluomo Taiwo, Oladayo Samuel, Adeyemo Adedeji Taiwo and Adeyanju Amoke (now at large) sometimes in 2019 in Abeokuta within the jurisdiction of this court conspired amongst yourselves to use the total sum of N2.475bn which sum you reasonably ought to have known forms part of the proceeds of your unlawful activity to wit: stealing from the treasury of Ogun State House of Assembly. You thereby committed an offence contrary to sections 18 (a), 15 (2) (d) of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act, 2011 as amended and punishable under section 15 (3) of the same Act.”

The commission said it intends to call at least 10 witnesses to testify and tender documents and exhibits.

The witnesses include Adamu Yusuf, Otitoju Kolawale, Yazid Bawa, Anyanwu Bright, Adekunbi Mojibola, Munkaila Huzaifa, and Idowu Olarenwaju.

Others are representatives of Ashkash Nigeria limited, representatives of Obasanjo Holdings Limited (managers of NNPC Mega Station) and representatives of Gateway Bank limited.

A source at the EFCC, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, also confirmed to our correspondent that the commission would follow up on the case with an application in Abeokuta for the case to be heard this week at the Federal High Court in Lagos by a vacation judge.

The EFCC had earlier released Oluomo on bail, and he is expected to return to the Lagos office of the anti-graft agency today alongside other officials of the Ogun State House of Assembly, including the clerk and accountant for questioning.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo at the Muritala Muhammad Airport, Lagos State.

Our correspondent gathered that Oluomo was arrested over allegations bordering on financial crimes.

A staff member at the assembly who pleaded anonymity said the speaker was picked up this morning at the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, by operatives following a tip-off.

The source said Oluomo was undergoing further grilling in the custody of the agency.

He was said to have been on the wanted list of the commission following his failure to honour the EFCC invitation several times.

He and some others were accused of forging signatures and financial documents of the assembly.

An attempt to get confirmation from the EFCC failed as the spokesperson for Lagos zonal office, Ayo Oyewole, refused to answer the calls.

Following the recent flagging-off of the mass COVID-19 vaccination campaign in Ogun State, the speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Mr. Olakunle Oluomo, has enjoined political office holders, including the state lawmakers and councillors to mobilize people en-masse towards getting vaccinated.

Mr. Oluomo who gave the admonition at the plenary session held at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, noted that the step became important with a view to flattening the curve of the pandemic, especially as the festive period approaches.

The speaker also encouraged Community Development Councils and Associations, religious leaders to mobilise and orientate members of the public on the need to get vaccinated, which is free in all health centres and designated points.

He lauded the 60-day window of opportunity provided by the state government to enable more people, including residents of border communities and people living in high-density areas get vaccinated.

Ogun  State Ministry of Works has been called upon  to liaise with the Federal Road Maintenance Agency ,FERMA to urgently put in place palliative measures on the failed portions of the Lagos- Abeokuta Expressway and Sango-Idiroko road to provide succor to road users, especially motorists plying the routes.

The Speaker of the state house of Assembly, Mr Olakunle Oluomo made the plea in his response to the submission of the Majority Leader, Mr Yusuf Sheriff, while speaking under Personal Explanations.

The Speaker lamented the deplorable state of the Federal roads, adding that the present administration in the State through its Works Ministry had applied palliatives on the failed sections of the Sango-Ota road. 

In another development, Speaker Oluomo announced that the Assembly would organize stakeholders’ fora on two bills namely: Ogun State Administration of Physical Planning, Urban Development, Slum Regeneration and Building Production Management law, 2021 as well as Ogun State Residents Registration Agency and the Registration of Ogun State Residents Law, 2021.

The Stakeholders will hold on Wednesday, 1st September, 2021 at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The Speaker, Ogun State House of Assembly, Mr Olakunle Oluomo, has led other lawmakers to pay a condolence visit to the family of the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun on the demise of his father, Dr Emmanuel Abiodun.

Mr Oluomo, during the condolence visit at the Iperu country home of the Governor described the deceased as a true father who lived a life worthy of emulation by the present and upcoming generations, and recalled that the lifetime of the late Pa Abiodun reflected forthrightness and integrity which were to be imbibed by all.

He later signed the condolence register in honour of the deceased and prayed for the entire family he left behind, while encouraging them to further appreciate God for a life well spent by the departed. 

Responding on behalf of the family, the Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun stated that her father in-law lived a fulfilled and righteous life, while appreciating the lawmakers for their visit.

Lawmakers on the entourage of the Speaker include his Deputy,  Alhaji Akeem   Balogun,Majority leader, Mr  Yusuf Sherif,  Mr Adeyemi Ademuyiwa,  Mr Yusuf Adejojo,  Mr Solomon Osho, Mr Oludaisi Elemide and  Mr Yusuf Amosun amongst others.
