Operations Sahel Sanity of the Nigerian Army to curb the security challenges in the North-West Zone of the nation has been extended to December 2020.

Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai who made this known at Army Special Super Camp 4 Faskari, Katsina State during an assessment tour said, the extension became necessary considering the tremendous successes recorded by the troops within the last 3 months.

Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai further explained that hundreds of bandits and their collaborators were neutralised while others were arrested and handed over to the appropriate authorities for further actions.

He added that about 100 bandit camps were destroyed, several informants were also arrested including hundreds of illegal miners in Zamfara State adding that large arms and ammunition were also recovered as well as hundreds of captives were also regained their freedom.

Lt General Tukur Buratai, therefore, commended the troops for their gallantry toward curbing banditry, cattle rustling, kidnapping and other forms of criminalities in the zone and urged them to maintain the tempo.

He also commended the media for their support and cooperation to the Military in disseminating its activities to the general public and urging the general public to assist the troops with useful and timely information needed to eradicate the criminals as well as their collaborators.

The Military has presented its general update on the successes made by the troops of Sahel Sanity from July to 5th September 2020.

According to the acting Director, Defence Media Operations, Brig. Gen. Benard Onyeuko, within the period under review the troops neutralized 100 bandits, arrested 148 bandits, 315 Illegal miners, 20 bandits informants, 6 logistic suppliers, 13 rustle cows sellers and 6 arms suppliers.

Brig. Gen. Benard Onyeuko revealed this during a Press Briefing at Army Super Camp 4, Faskari, Katsina State.

Mr Benard explained that the troops also rescued 107 kidnap victims and recovered 43 AK47 rifles, 1 General-purpose machine gun (GPMG) 100 Dane Guns, 3261 (7.6mm special ammunitions) and 151 Local Guns Ammunitions.

He noted that the troops of Sahel Sanity operation, a subsidiary of Operation Hadarin Daji, which was launched on the 6th July 2020 to end Banditry, Kidnapping, cattle rustling, incessant killings and sundry crimes in the northwest has from inception till date, foiled 74 Kidnap attempt, 53 attacks and destroyed 81 bandits notorious camps including notorious Dangote camp.

Brig. Benard said, 3984 cows, 1627 Sheep and 3 camels were recovered from bandits during various operations within the period.

According to him, the Nigerian army appreciated the support of the people in the Northwest and the media, saying the military needed more to support excel in the operation.
