Senator Kola Balogun has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The resignation of the senator, representing Oyo South Senatorial District was contained in a letter addressed to the chairman of the party in Ward 12, Ibadan North-East Local Government Area.

According to a statement by the media aide to Senator Balogun, Mr Dapo Falade, the letter, dated 28 April, 2022, was received and acknowledged by the PDP Ward Chairman, Tijani Wasiu, on 29 April, 2022.

The vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports and Youth Development did not state his reason for leaving the party.

Senator Balogun, in the letter, titled “Letter Of Resignation From The Peoples Democratic Party”, said the resignation took effect from 28 April, 2022.

He thanked the party for giving him the opportunity to serve Oyo South Senatorial District in the ninth Senate of the National Assembly.

Senator Balogun said he enjoyed the cooperation of the PDP leadership and its members till the month of April this year and wished the party the best of luck.

I, Senator Dr. Kola Balogun, senator presently representing Oyo South Senatorial District at the 9th Senate, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Abuja, hereby tender my membership resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party of Nigeria, with effect from today 28th April, 2022.”

“I thank the party for giving me the opportunity to serve my people in the capacity of a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and your cooperation which I enjoyed till the month of April 2022.”

Senator Kola Balogun, who, until his resignation, was the only PDP senator from Oyo State in the ninth Senate, stated in the resignation letter.

Agriculture sector is pivotal to achieving diversification of the Nigerian economy. 

The senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District, senator Kola Balogun stated this at the three days training programme held at the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training, IAR&T, Apata Ibadan. 

Senator Balogun explained that agriculture has vast potentials the government could leverage on to create jobs and reduce poverty in the country.

Senator Balogun, therefore, urged the participants to make use of knowledge and skills acquired during the training.

Also speaking, Executive Director, Institute of Agricultural Research & Training, IAR&T, Ibadan, Professor Veronica Obatolu pointed out that the country has the natural endowment for agriculture to thrive and provide basis for the growth of agro-allied industries and businesses. 

Professor Obatolu urged government to fund Agricultural institutes to make them bedrock of diversification as was the case before the oil boom era when the sector provided the bulk of the country’s revenue.

Three hundred persons in Oyo South Senatorial District have benefitted from Federal government grant through Small and Medium Scale Enterprises of Nigeria, SMEDAN, facilitated by the lawmaker representing the district at the upper chamber, Senator Kola Balogun to start or boost their businesses.

The beneficiaries who were selected from the nine local governments which make up the district received between twenty and fifty thousand naira grants.

Presenting the payment vouchers to the beneficiaries, the facilitator, Senator Kola Balogun said the empowerment programme was geared towards fulfilling his electioneering promises.

Senator Balogun who noted that another empowerment initiative targeted at one thousand people had been slated for March this year and urged the beneficiaries to utilise the grant judiciously in order to qualify for the greater opportunities ahead.

He promised to continue to represent his constituents positively at the Senate.

Oyo State coordinator of SMEDAN, Mrs Mabel Ojogbede explained that the grants were given to the beneficiaries based on their businesses.

Two of the beneficiaries Mr Wole Opadeye and Ms Fatima Alamu appreciated both the federal government and Senator Balogun for the gesture.

They pledged to make judicious use of the money to add value to their businesses.
