The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NUP, in the South West Zone has appealed to the incoming administration at the federal level to create a separate ministry for retirees to properly address the challenges of senior citizens.

The Zonal Public Relations Officer of the union, Dr Olusegun Abatan while reading the communiqué of the pensioners after their quarterly meeting in Abeokuta stated that the retirees appealed to the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to improve the welfare of the pensioners.

The pensioners while congratulating the re-elected governors in the South West urged all of them to implement the consequential adjustment and the thirty-five per cent increment in pension.

Eleven aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 gubernatorial elections in three Southwest states, Oyo, Ogun and Lagos States presented themselves for screening before a committee set up by the party.

The 7- man screening committee led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi is attending to the aspirants at the Southwest PDP secretariat, old Bodija, Ibadan.

The aspirants from Ogun state are Segun Sowunmi; Jimi Lawal and Oladipupo Adebutu, while two aspirants from Oyo state are Hazeem Gbolarumi and the state governor, Seyi Makinde.

Six aspirants from Lagos state are David Kolawole; Shamsideen Dosumu; Jimi Karmal; AbdulAzeez Adediran; Adedeji Doherty and Rhodes Gbadebo.

Speaking with journalists on the exercise, the Chairman Peoples Democratic party screening committee for the south west, Senator  Ahmed Makarfi  urged electoral stakeholders in the country to create a level playing field for all candidates in next year’s general elections to ensure that the wish of Nigerians prevail.

Senator Makarfi enjoined the aspirants to comply with the PDP guidelines and the electoral act.

He stressed that the screening was to ensure that the candidates or aspirants of the party  are in full compliance with the law.

Senator Makarfi added that the party is working assiduously to ensure that the party emerge victorious at the general election.

Radio Nigeria reports that Governor Seyi Makinde was the first aspirant to be screened.

The exercise was ongoing at the time of filing this report.

Farmers and value chain actors in rice growing and processing have appealed to government at all levels to make agro inputs particularly quality seed, fertilizer and loan accessible to them to boost their productivity. 

Those who made the appeal while speaking with Radio Nigeria correspondent in Abeokuta on the South West’s potential for massive rice cultivation, maintained that the measures would enhance the region’s effort to achieve self-sufficiency in the production of the commodity.
