An Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a nineteen-year-old man, Lekan Alaka, to three months imprisonment for stealing plastic chairs worth ninety-one thousand two hundred nairas from Mount Zion Anglican Church.

Magistrate Olajumoke Somefun in her judgement held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubts sentencing the suspect to three months imprisonment with an option of an N100, 000 fine.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Mr Olakunle Shonibare told the court that the convict committed the offence on Oct. 23, at about 4.30 a.m. at Mount Zion Anglican Church, Leme area in Abeokuta.

He said the convict scaled the church fence and stole 24 pieces of plastic chairs, the property of Mount Zion Anglican Church.

The prosecutor said the convict was arrested by vigilante officers in the community while he was trying to escape with the stolen items the offence he said contravened the provisions of Sections 415 of the Criminal Law of Ogun,2006.

A 46 years old socialite, Mary Maisirat Akerele has been remanded in prison for stealing.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan Zonal Office on Monday, arraigned Akerele on a five-count charge bordering on stealing to the tune of Thirty-Five Million Five Hundred and Twenty Thousand Naira before Justice Abiodun Akinyemi of the Ogun State High Court 4, Abeokuta.

Trouble started for the 46-years-old socialite, who resides in Aseko area of Idiroko Ogun State, when the EFCC received a petition, alledging that she collected the said sum in installments from one Alhaja Oladoja Abike for the purpose of supplying four truck-load of rice from a rice milling company at Bida, Niger state but diverted the funds.  

The defendant pleaded ‘not guilty’ when the charge was read to her.

Counsel to the defendant, H. A Omikunle made an oral application for his client’s bail. 

However, counsel to EFCC, Shamsuddeen Bashir, opposed the application due to the defendant’s failure to keep the terms  of the administrative bail earlier granted her.

Justice Akinyemi adjourned the case till March 4 for determination of the bail application an ordered the remand of the defendant in the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Ibara, Abeokuta

Nigeria Police, Osun State Command has dragged two Osogbo High Court staff before the Magistrate Court sitting in Osogbo over alleged stealing of typing sheets.

The defendants Adedoyin Adebowale, 46, and Sulaiman Tajudeen 46 were said to have committed the offense on November 20,2020 at High Court premises, Oke-Fia, Osogbo.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Adeoye Kayode alleged that the defendants did conspire between them and stole six packs of Typing Sheets valued N30,000, property of Osun State Judiciary.

Adeoye said that the offense committed contravened Section 516 and 383 punishable under Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol ll Law of Osun State 2002.

Both defendants pleaded not guilty to the allegations preferred against them.

Defence Counsel, Mr Taiwo Awokunle made an oral application for the bail of the defendants in most liberal term.

He said that being the staff of state judiciary, they would never jump bail and would provide reliable sureties if granted bail.

Presiding Magistrate, Mrs Adijat Oloyade granted bail to the defendants in sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She thereby adjourned the case till January 7, 2021 for hearing.

An Osogbo magistrate court has arraigned a staff of Osun Internal Revenue Service (OIRS), Mr. Dare Ogunrinde for allegedly stealing the sum of six hundred and sixty-five thousand, seven hundred and twelve naira.

The accused person was arraigned on a 2-count charge bothering on stealing and breach of peace.

According to the Police Prosecutor, Mr. Abiodun Fatoyinbo, the accused, a level 10 officer with the agency received the said sum as a tax from some companies and refused to remit the amount to government coffers.

He said the offense committed contravenes section 353 and punishable under section 390 (9) of criminal code, cap 34, vol.11, law of Osun State, 2002.

Mr. Fatoyinbo added that the accused person, by his refusal to issue tax receipt of the amount paid conducted himself in a manner that could cause a breach of peace, thereby committed an offense contrary to and punishable under section 249 (9) of criminal code cap 34 law of Osun State, 2002.

The accused person, however, pleaded not guilty to the allegations preferred against him.

His counsel, Musa Abdullahi pleaded with the court to grant his client bail on very liberal terms.

The Magistrate, Mr. Olusegun Ayilara, therefore, granted the accused person bail in the sum of 500,000 naira with 2 sureties in like sum, saying one of them must be a civil servant of not less than level 10 and must be a house owner with evidence of such.

Also, both sureties must be sworn to an affidavit of means.

He thereafter adjourned the case to March 15 for hearing.
