The Nigeria Customs Service, Oyo/Osun Area Command, says its commitment to revenue generation, trade facilitation, and anti-smuggling operations remains strong as ever.

The command also highlighted the importance of traditional leadership in fostering a secure and economically vibrant society.

These were emphasized by the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Gambo Aliyu, during a courtesy visit to the Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Rasidi Ladoja in his palace.

A release signed by the  command’s Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Customs I, Mr  Abdulmalik Akintola indicated that the  visit  was aimed at strengthening the partnership between the Nigeria Customs Service and the traditional institution, recognizing the vital role traditional rulers play in sustaining peace and community cooperation.

The command also acknowledged the support received from the Olubadan and the people of Ibadan, assuring that officers would remain respectful and professional in the discharge of their duties.

Reacting, The Olubadan of ibadan land, oba Rasidi Ladoja urged the command to ensure border safety and protect the country against economic saboteurs.

The visit concluded with Comptroller Aliyu seeking the Olubadan’s blessings and prayers for continuous wisdom, strength, and protection as the Command serves the nation.

The Nigeria Customs Service says it recorded 957 seizures in Ogun State last year and realized about 97 million naira revenue from the auction sales of Petroleum products and assessment of items imported from neighbouring countries.

The Customs Area Controller, Ogun – One Area Command, Mr Bamidele Makinde stated this at Idi iroko during a chat with journalists on the achievements of the command in 2022.

Mr Makinde noted that the revenue generated last year represented a 300 per cent increase, compared to the 36 million naira realized by the Command in the year 2021 while the payable duty value of seizures recorded during the year under review was worth more than 5 billion naira. 

He said the Command also arrested 15 suspected smugglers with prohibited goods at different locations, especially exit points in the State, pointing out that some of the cases had been charged to court. 

The Customs Area Controller announced that 76 trailer loads of smuggled rice, 14 tanker loads of Premium Motor Spirit, one tanker load of Adulterated Diesel as well as 130 units of vehicles, hard drugs, clothing materials and other consumables were among the items intercepted within the period under review.

Mr Makinde emphasized that synergy with all stakeholders, particularly sister security agencies and quality intelligence gathering had enhanced their operations noting that the command would continue to encourage legitimate traders with the required information and support for their business to thrive.
