Nigerian Correctional Service says it will now be rejecting inmates it feels could constitute an environmental hazard to the centre.

Comptroller Nigerian Correctional Service Oyo State Command Mr. Tosin Akinrojumu Stated this today during the visit of the state’s Chief Judge, Justice Muktar Abimbola to Agodi Correctional Centre Ibadan.

Mr. Akinrojomu noted that the new Correctional Centre Act has empowered the service to reject inmate to reduce the effect of poor environment in the Correctional Centre.

He explained that the Ibadan Correctional Centre, which has a capacity of three hundred and ninety inmates now accommodates one thousand two thousand seventy-six, a situation he described as alarming.

The Comptroller, however, commended the efforts of the Judiciary in ensuring decongestion in the state correctional centres.

In a remark, the Chief Judge in Oyo State, Justice Muntar Abimbola said the state judiciary had adopted a different strategy to decongest correctional centres.

He said the arm of Government would continue into ensuring that anybody arrested for any offence was prosecuted according to the law.
