Aminu Ado Bayero one of the Sons of late Emir Ado Bayero has been crowned the 15th Emir of Kano. The new emir and Sanusi contested for emirship in 2014.

The announcement was made by the secretary to the state government a few hours after the removal of Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Until his appointment as emir of Kano, Bayero was the Emir of Bichi, one of the four newly created emirates.

The appointment of the new emir takes immediate effect according to the SSG.

The Kano state government on Monday dethroned the Emir over what it described as disrespect to instructions from Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State and other lawful authorities.

Emir of Kano on 8 June 2014

The deposed emir, Sanusi was selected to succeed his granduncle, Ado Bayero, as the Emir of Kano on 8 June 2014.

Many expected Bayero’s son (Who is now the new emir) to succeed him and protested Sanusi’s appointment.

During his reign, Sanusi spoke out on government policies, breaking with royal tradition and also criticised Kano government of misplaced priorities.

He has called for an end to child marriage, building more schools instead of mosques, and infrastructural development.

Sanusi called for population planning and has said that polygamy was increasing poverty in the region.

Sanusi has also advocated for eugenics to solve the Almajiri issue.

Heavily armed security personnel from the State Security Service, Police, Civil Defence and Army took over the palace shortly after the announcement.

Security was also beefed up at the Kano State House of assembly and the government house.
