Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State wants the state judiciary to give priority to cases that have to do with rape and other forms of sexual abuse.

Governor Abiodun made the call when he received a coalition of women’s group which staged a peaceful protest against sexual harassment of women at the Okemosan Abeokuta Governor’s office.

Our Correspondent Bolanle Adesida completes the story.

The protesters comprised of representatives of different women’s groups, organizations and agencies as well as political appointees, professionals and technocrats.

At the forefront of the protest was the wife of the Ogun State Governor, Mrs Bamidele Abiodun who appealed to every member of the society to protect the rights of women.

Other notable women that took part in the peaceful protest, including former deputy Governor, Alhaja Salmot Badru, former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mrs Titi Oseni Gomez and serving top government functionaries, were resolute in their demands that all forms of sexual harassment must stop.

Responding, Governor Dapo Abiodun stressed the need for the state Judiciary to take proactive steps towards fast-tracking cases of sexual violence and ensure that offenders were promptly brought to book.

Governor Abiodun who pointed out that the state government recently came up with a law to support women against all forms of abuse, maintained that violence in any form, especially against women was unacceptable.

The Governor explained that a committee had been set up to review the Violence against Persons Prohibition Law 2017 and to also ensure that issues of abuses against the girl child and women were addressed.
