The Women Council of the Trade Union Congress, TUC, has denounced the rise in rape cases and other gender-based violence in the country.
Members of the TUC Women Commission in Delta State, made their feelings known in a rally across major streets of Asaba, holding placards with inscriptions such as: Future Mothers Deserve Protection, No to Rape is a Collective Responsibility, and Speak up Against Rape.
In a speech, the Trade Union Congress Women Commission National Chairperson, Comrade Hafsat Shuibu, represented by Delta State Chairperson of the Women Commission, Comrade Faith Usoroh, called for stiffer penalty to deter perpetrators of gender based violence.
Comrade Shuibu also appealed for a concerted effort against rape, noting that the offence was majorly perpetrated against women and the girl child.
The TUC National Chairperson added that the union was open to partnerships with relevant stakeholders aimed at educating women on procedures for collecting evidence for successful prosecution of rape cases.
The women also visited the Delta State House of Assembly, the Police Headquarters in Asaba, and the Office of the Secretary to Delta State Government to register their complaint.
