The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has challenged local broadcast media to always take the lead in telling the Nigerian story.
The Minister made the call at the inauguration of Radio Nigeria Ogo Ilu 89.3 FM in Oko, Surulere local government Area of Oyo state.
Radio Nigeria reports that the FM station was facilitated by a member, house of representatives, Mr Segun Odebunmi.
Establishment of Ogo Ilu 89.3 FM makes it the seventh FM station under FRCN, Ibadan National station.
The beautiful office complex situated on Osogbo road, Oko, Oyo state is painted in Purple, Lilac and Orange colours.
The two building compartment houses a number of offices for effective service delivery.
Inaugurating the office, Alhaji Lai Muhammed congratulated the radio Nigeria Family, People of Oko and the facilitator of the project for being part of the first FRCN station as a constituency project.
The Minister, while describing as unfortunate a situation where indigenous broadcast outfits relied on foreign media on local information, said the act should be stopped.
Alhaji Lai Muhammed made reference to CNN’s supposedly exclusive report on the Lekki toll gate incident which it claimed that 38 people were killed during the protest only to retract and report that one person died.
In a reaction, Director General, FRCN, Dr Mansur Liman while noting that the establishment of the FM station was to bring information closer to the people said it was an avenue to stop the spread of fake news.
Dr Liman who appreciated president Muhammadu Buhari for creating enabling environment in the country, maintained that addition of Ogo Ilu 89.3 FM was an affirmation of the determination of FRCN to uplift the people and unite the nation.
The facilitator of the project, Mr Segun Odebunmi hinted that the station was created to bring dividends of democracy to the people and also to ensure that the people were informed.
In a remark, Oranmiyan Oko, Oba Solomon Akinola pledged the readiness of Oko community to support the new station.
Some residents of Oko who spoke with Radio Nigeria could not hide their joy as they hoped to be more informed through Radio Nigeria.
High points of the event were presentation of gifts to the minister and the facilitator of the project as well as cultural presentation.
