The Oyo State Police Command has clarified that calm has been restored in Ogbomoso and neighbouring communities following a false alarm that triggered rumours of a bandit attack around Are-Ago High School and Ajaawa.

In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, the command said it swiftly deployed patrol and surveillance teams to the affected areas to verify the report and prevent any breakdown of law and order.

The fear reportedly spread quickly beyond the school, with unverified information circulating among neighbouring schools and communities.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the individuals were an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ilorin, accompanied by two civilians in a Toyota Venza SUV.

They were said to have visited a female acquaintance to celebrate her birthday.

The statement added that an altercation involving some teachers further heightened suspicion before NSCDC authorities later confirmed the officer’s identity.

The police command stressed that there was no bandit attack or security breach and warned residents against spreading fake news capable of causing panic and disrupting public peace.

Opposition political parties in Nigeria say they will present a single, consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.

This follows a national summit held in Ibadan, aimed at strengthening efforts to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

At the meeting, party leaders also resolved to resist what they described as attempts to impose a one-party system on the country.

These resolutions were contained in a communiqué signed by party chairmen and read by a factional leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The opposition parties pledged to defend multi-party democracy and rejected alleged moves to impose President Bola Tinubu as the sole candidate in the 2027 elections.

They reaffirmed their commitment to fully participate in the elections, including fielding candidates at all levels, while working towards a unified presidential flagbearer.

The summit also called for the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, accusing him of bias in favour of the ruling party.

Earlier, the host governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, warned against what he described as a growing concentration of political power in the country.

Governor Makinde said democracy depends on a viable opposition, noting that the dominance of one party risks weakening the democratic system.

Corps members have been encouraged to see the challenges facing Nigeria as stepping stones to greatness, rather than reasons for discouragement.

Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, advised while declaring open the 2026 Batch A Stream Two orientation course of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, at the Permanent Orientation Camp in Iseyin.

Represented by the Director of Youth in the Ministry of Youth Development, Alhaja Kudirat Mustapha, the governor noted that the nation’s current challenges require the collective creativity, energy, and resilience of corps members to drive progress and national development.

“Gentlemen, corps members, you are beginning your service year at a time when our nation needs your energy, creativity, and resilience more than ever before. Nigeria’s challenges are real, but so are the opportunities. I urge you not to see this service year merely as a statutory obligation, but as a unique opportunity to contribute meaningfully to nation-building, develop leadership skills, and positively impact the communities where you will serve.”

Governor Makinde emphasized that the NYSC scheme, since its establishment in 1973, has remained a vital instrument for fostering unity, promoting national integration, and bridging ethnic, religious, and cultural divides.

He also urged corps members to take full advantage of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme to become self-reliant.

“I encourage you to embrace the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme wholeheartedly. Acquire skills that will make you self-reliant, innovative, and economically empowered beyond your service year. The future belongs to those who are prepared, and this programme is designed to prepare you for life after NYSC.”

The governor further assured corps members of their safety and welfare throughout their service year, noting that Oyo State remains hospitable and peaceful.

“Oyo State is known for its rich history, hospitality, cultural diversity, and peaceful coexistence. We have deliberately created an enabling environment for corps members to live, work, and serve safely. I assure you that our administration will continue to prioritize your welfare, security, and well-being throughout your service year.”

Earlier, the Oyo State Coordinator of the NYSC, Mr Kayode Ola-Peters, disclosed that, through deliberate engagement and the commitment of Governor Makinde, the 4,000-capacity multipurpose hall at the Iseyin Orientation Camp has been tiled.

Mr Ola-Peters added that the current Stream Two exercise represents not only the continuation of the orientation programme but also a renewed commitment to achieving the 2026 Batch ‘A’ theme: “Revamping the Orientation Course Experience as a Platform for Impactful Service by Corps Members.”

He explained that this vision has challenged NYSC in the state “to reimagine the Orientation Course as more than a routine exercise. It is a deliberate and strategic foundation upon which you will build a year of relevance, innovation, and impactful service across communities.”

Mr Ola-Peters said 3,026 corps members comprising 1, 217 males and 1,809 females have so far been registered, while 451 other corps members representing 188 males and 263 females were dislodged to the Iseyin Permanent Orientation Camp for the exercise.

According to the statement, the palace had informed the state  government through the Ministry of local government and Chieftaincy matters.

Elevating the monarch, Governor Seyi Makinde who spoke through the Deputy Governor, Chief Bayo Lawal said the coronation became imperative in order not to create vacuum in the Ibadan chieftaincy law.

He said “There are moments in the lives of people when history, culture, and governance converge to produce an enduring legacy. Today is one of such moments.“

Agriculture

By Iyabo Adebisi

The Oyo State Government has urged farmers in the state to closely monitor weather forecasts and climate information to ensure a productive farming season.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Olasunkanmi Olaleye, made the call during the flag-off of the 2026 Farming Season, the public presentation of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction Programme, and the launch of the 50 per cent Tractorisation Subsidy under the Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery (SAfER) Programme at the Local Government Service Commission Auditorium, Secretariat, Ibadan.

Mr Olaleye said the seasonal climate prediction by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) provides crucial information on rainfall patterns, the onset and cessation of the rainy season, dry spells and temperature variations.

According to him, parts of Oyo State are expected to experience varying dry spell conditions during the 2026 farming season, stressing the need for farmers to follow weather advisories and agricultural extension guidance to minimise climate-related risks.

“Today’s sensitisation on weather forecasting formally marks the commencement of another agricultural planting season calendar Our primary objective is to equip our farmers with essential knowledge regarding weather predictions that will significantly influence agricultural production throughout the state, thereby ensuring they are well-prepared for a productive and successful planting season”

“Complementing this effort, I am pleased to formally flag off the 50% Tractorisation Subsidy Programme under the Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery (SAfER) initiative, and to share with you the progress, impact, and future direction of this transformative programme.”

The commissioner described agriculture as the backbone of the Oyo State economy, noting that it employs thousands of smallholder farmers and contributes significantly to food supply and rural livelihoods.

“However, land preparation has traditionally been labour intensive, time-consuming, and costly-limiting productivity, reducing farm sizes, and constraining food output. To address these challenges, the Government of Oyo State introduced the 50% Tractorisation Subsidy Programme, under which the State Government subsidises 50% of the cost of land ploughing, making mechanised farming more accessible, affordable, and efficient for our farmers.”

“The objectives of this programme are clear: to reduce the cost of land preparation for farmers; to promote mechanised farming for increased productivity and higher yields; to improve the income of smallholder farmers; and to encourage the adoption of modern agricultural practices through strengthened extension of support services.”

Also speaking, the Oyo State Contact Person of NiMet, Mr Emmanuel Udoh, warned farmers against being misled by early rainfall, saying the first rain of the year does not necessarily mark the beginning of the planting season.

Mr Udoh advised farmers to wait until soil moisture reaches about 50 per cent before planting.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Oyo State Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs Abosede Owoeye, expressed the ministry’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with NiMet and other relevant agencies to ensure that climate information reaches grassroots farmers in a clear, timely and actionable format.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised the alarm over the staggering number of uncollected Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs in Oyo State, warning that the development threatens democratic participation

.Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Professor Adeniran Tella, disclosed that no fewer than 515,254 PVCs remain unclaimed across Oyo State, describing the figure as deeply concerning.

Prof. Tella made the disclosure in Oyo town during a Voter Education and Enlightenment Programme organised as part of the sensitisation campaign for the ongoing second phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

Breaking down the figures, he revealed that 44,742 PVCs remain uncollected in four local government areas within Oyo Zone alone.

Atiba leads with 16,528 cards, followed by Oyo East with 11,599, Oyo West with 9,305, and Afijio with 7,310—representing 8.7 per cent of the total uncollected PVCs in the state.

To tackle accessibility challenges, Prof. Tella announced that INEC has deployed and commenced the rotation of its Voter Enrolment Device (IVED) machines across all 351 registration areas in Oyo State.

He said the machines began operation on February 9 and will run for 50 days, operating daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., excluding weekends and public holidays, before suspension on April 10, 2026.

The REC explained that the CVR exercise targets Nigerians who have just turned 18, those who have never registered, individuals seeking transfer of voting location, and citizens with lost or damaged PVCs.

While urging eligible residents to take advantage of the exercise, Prof. Tella stressed that registration alone is not enough without collecting the PVC, which remains the ultimate instrument for exercising the right to vote.

Traditional rulers, community leaders, artisans, traders, religious leaders, youth and women groups, security agencies, and political stakeholders attended the event, which focused on mobilising citizens to play their part in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.

He said it was time the excessive activities of the various house agents were stopped, assuring all stakeholders that the proposed legislation would be completed and presented to Governor Seyi Makinde for assent before the end of the first quarter of the year.

“This bill will demonstrate how serious the leadership of the House is in addressing the menace of extortion by house agents. It will help protect residents from exploitation and restore sanity to the housing sector in Oyo State. The move will no doubt bring relief to residents who have long decried the unregulated practices of house agents.”

Addressing the gathering, the Speaker emphasized his role as a representative of young people in governance, describing himself as the voice of the Youth Parliament.

He called for deliberate investment in modern skill acquisition centers that would equip youths with relevant skills to thrive in today’s competitive and challenging world.

Former Senate Leader, Senator Teslim Folarin, has urged eligible voters across Oyo State to actively participate in the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, describing it as the foundation of democratic participation ahead of the 2027 general election.

Speaking during an event on his tour of the Egbeda/Ona-Ara Federal Constituency, Senator Folarin said massive voter registration would position Oyo State to significantly improve its 2023 electoral performance for President Bola Tinubu in the next general election.

He emphasized that an expanded voter base would deepen democratic legitimacy and guarantee a clearer, more authentic expression of the people’s will at the polls.

The APC chieftain noted that Oyo State occupies a strategic place in national electoral calculations, stressing that coordinated grassroots mobilisation could enable the state to deliver record-breaking results in the South-West and across Nigeria.

Senator Folarin specifically called on youths, newly eligible voters who have just turned eighteen, and residents yet to update their voter records to act swiftly within the registration window.

He described voter registration as both a civic duty and a decisive step toward consolidating Nigeria’s democratic gains.

Reaffirming his commitment to unity of purpose and active citizen engagement, Senator Folarin said sustained participation would ensure the South-West emerges as a formidable and decisive voting bloc on Nigeria’s democratic path to 2027.
