Insecurity and socio-economic problems are some of the factors that bring about irregular migration, although migration itself is not a problem, the procedure employed for migration, however may be a problem.
This was part of submissions of speakers at a migration reporting training held virtually.
Among issues discussed were essence of migration, types of migration, terminologies in reporting migration related issues and its benefits.
The Media Lead, The Migrant Project, Mr Tayo Elegbede while speaking on the topic, “The Migration Project, Migration Technologies Trends and Gaps” explained that journalists must be exposed to basic principles of migration reporting.
The speaker while noting that irregular migration was as expensive as the regular hinted that irregular migrants were often victims of abuse, rape, organ harvesting, and enslavement among others.
Mr Elegbede who pointed out that there have been 998 reported deaths of migrants on the Mediterranean Sea in the year 2020, said the media owed the public responsibility of properly informing and directing them through the right path.
He maintained that the media should ensure that they reported facts; know the law, show humanity and challenge hate as well as extremism.
Another speaker, Mr Nosakhare Eruumwusee while delivering a paper on migration reporting amidst crises, acknowledged that there were many factors propelling migration but advised that before embarking on the journey, potential migrants should ask salient questions on the purpose of the migration.
Mr Eruumwusee said most people who fell victims of irregular migration were motivated by fake affluent lives portrayed by individuals abroad on the social media.
Mr Erunmwussee added that migration was a necessity of human life which should be done through legal means.
