I know a lot of us have heard of SWOT analysis and some of the people who have, might be like, it is for businesses and organisations, but it’s a fantastic tool for personal growth too!

So, for the benefit of those who don’t what it is about let’s do a quick breakdown.

What is SWOT analysis?

SWOT analysis is a strategic planning tool that helps individuals, teams, or organizations assess their current position and develop strategies for growth and improvement.

It examines four key areas: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats:

  • Strengths (S): Internal factors that give you an advantage over others.
  • Weaknesses (W): Internal factors that put you at a disadvantage.
  • Opportunities (O): External factors you can exploit to your advantage.
  • Threats (T): External factors that could cause trouble for you.

Here are a few tips for conducting a SWOT analysis.

A. Strengths:

  1. What do you do well?
  2. What unique resources or skills do you possess?
  3. What do others see as your strengths?

Examples: Strong communication skills, high emotional intelligence, technical expertise in your field, strong work ethic, unusual insight/perspective into issues.

B. Weaknesses:

Definition: Internal factors that hinder your growth or success.

  1. What skills or knowledge do you lack?
  2. Where do you feel insecure or underperform?
  3. What feedback have you received about areas for improvement?
  4. What areas need improvement?
  5. What disadvantages might hinder your success?

Examples: Difficulty with time management, lack of public speaking confidence, limited experience in leadership roles, struggles with adapting to change.

C. Opportunities:

Definition: External factors you can leverage for growth or success.

  1. What trends or changes can you capitalize on?
    1. Are there unmet needs or gaps in the market?
    1. How can you leverage partnerships or external support?

Examples: Growing demand for a specific skill in your industry, availability of online courses or certifications, networking opportunities at conferences, mentorship programs

D. Threats:

Definition: External factors that could hinder your progress.

  1. What obstacles do you face?
  2. Who are your competitors, and what advantages do they have?
  3. What external factors could negatively impact you?

Examples: Economic downturns, industry disruption, changing consumer preferences, intense competition for jobs, industry automation reducing job roles, lack of career advancement in your current role.

Evaluating your Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats can give you fresh insights and help you plan for 2025.

  1. Play to Your Strengths: What are you great at? Maybe it’s public speaking, problem-solving, or staying calm under pressure. Recognize these strengths and use them to your advantage.
  2. Face Your Weaknesses: Be honest about where you could improve. Whether it’s time management or asking for help, knowing your weaknesses is the first step to overcoming them. Identify areas where you struggle or feel insecure. Accept them without self-judgment; everyone has areas for improvement. View them as opportunities for growth. Focus on one area at a time to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Remember, no one is perfect. Strengthening your weaknesses doesn’t mean erasing them entirely.
  3. Spot Opportunities: Look for external factors that could boost your success. Is there a new skill you’ve been meaning to learn or a mentor you can connect with? Opportunities often lie in solving problems. Ask yourself, what are people around me complaining about? What inefficiencies exist in the systems or processes currently in use?
  4. Prepare for Threats: Identify potential roadblocks. It might be weaknesses within yourself, your team, or your resources. It might be financial challenges, procrastination, or changes in your industry. Evaluate how severe the consequences of each threat could be. Prepare backup plans for high-impact threats.

Answer these questions:

  1. What is the worst-case scenario?
  2. What actions will mitigate the damage?

Having a plan to handle these makes them less daunting and terrifying.

Once you’ve done your SWOT analysis, revisit it every few months.

It’s a handy way to stay prepared, adaptable, focused and fired up throughout the year.

In today’s always-on world, with many “online” and “real-time” notifications and many other distractions vying for our attention, staying focused can feel like a superpower.

To make the most of 2025, sharpening your concentration skills is a must.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Know What Matters Most: Start by figuring out your priorities. Tools like the Eisenhower Matrix (A task management tool that helps you organize and prioritize tasks by urgency and importance. Using the tool, you’ll divide your tasks into four boxes based on the tasks you’ll do first, the tasks you’ll schedule for later, the tasks you’ll delegate, and the tasks you’ll delete.), can help you sort tasks by urgency and importance, so you spend time on what really counts.
  2. Create a No-Distractions Zone: Set up a space where you can work without interruptions. Silence those pesky notifications and let your family, colleagues, or roommates know when you’re in focus mode.
  3. Time-Block Your Day: Plan your day in chunks dedicated to specific tasks. For example, spend the first two hours of your morning tackling your most important work.
  4. Stay Present: Practicing mindfulness, like meditating or taking deep breaths, as this helps train your brain to focus on the here and now.
  5. Use Helpful Tools: There are mobile apps like Pomodoro timers that can keep you on track. Just remember, tools are only as good as your habits!

By honing your focus, you’ll get more done in less time and still have energy left for the things you love.

Have a great year!

The world’s oldest person, Japanese woman Tomiko Itooka, has died aged 116, the city where she lived, Ashiya, announced on Saturday.

Itooka, who had four children and five grandchildren, died on December 29 at a nursing home where she resided since 2019, the southern city’s mayor said in a statement. She was born on May 23, 1908, in the commercial hub of Osaka, near Ashiya — four months before the Ford Model T was launched in the United States.

As a student, she played volleyball. In her older age, Itooka enjoyed bananas and Calpis, a milky soft drink popular in Japan, according to the mayor’s statement.Women typically enjoy longevity in Japan, but the country is facing a worsening demographic crisis as its expanding elderly population leads to soaring medical and welfare costs, with a shrinking labour force to pay for it.As of September, Japan counted more than 95,000 people who were 100 or older — 88 per cent of whom were women.

The Magic of Goal-Setting

As the New Year kicks off, setting clear and achievable goals is the perfect way to start strong.

Goal setting is the process of identifying specific, measurable, and time-bound objectives you want to achieve in various aspects of your life, such as personal development, career, health, or relationships. It involves outlining clear steps and strategies to turn your aspirations into actionable plans.

Goals give you direction and purpose, helping you focus your energy where it matters most.

Benefits of Goal-Setting

Goal-setting is a powerful practice that can transform how you approach your personal and professional life. Here are some of its key benefits:

  1. Clarity and Direction
Setting goals gives you a clear roadmap, helping you focus on what truly matters. Instead of drifting aimlessly, you know exactly where you’re headed and can plan your actions accordingly.
  2. Increased Motivation
Goals act as a source of inspiration. When you have a target in mind, you’re more likely to stay driven, even when challenges arise.
  3. Improved Time Management
With specific goals, you can prioritize tasks effectively, making better use of your time and avoiding unnecessary distractions.
  4. Enhanced Focus
Goals help you concentrate on what’s important, filtering out irrelevant tasks or activities that don’t align with your objectives.
  5. Sense of Achievement
Reaching a goal, no matter how small gives you a sense of accomplishment. This builds confidence and encourages you to aim higher.
  6. Accountability
Written goals create a sense of responsibility. They push you to take consistent action and evaluate your progress regularly.
  7. Personal and Professional Growth
Goal-setting challenges you to step out of your comfort zone, learn new skills, and grow as a person.
  8. Better Decision-Making
With clear goals, decision-making becomes easier. You’re better equipped to choose actions that align with your objectives.
  9. Resilience and Adaptability
Goals help you stay resilient. Even if obstacles arise, having a clear purpose allows you to adapt and keep moving forward.
  10. Life Satisfaction

Working toward meaningful goals gives your life purpose and fulfilment, making your journey more rewarding.

By setting goals thoughtfully, you can take charge of your future, turning dreams into actionable plans and achievements.

Here’s how to create goals that work for you:

  1. Dream Big, Start Small: Imagine where you want to be by the end of 2025. Whether it’s advancing your career, improving your health, or finding personal joy, let that vision inspire you.
  2. Make It SMART: Keep your goals Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Instead of saying, “I want to get healthier,” try, “I’ll exercise three times a week and cut down on sugar for six months.”
  3. Break It Down: Big goals can feel overwhelming, so divide them into smaller, manageable steps. Monthly or weekly milestones will keep you on track.
  4. Write Them Down: Jotting down your goals makes them more real. Use a notebook or an app to track your progress and reflect regularly.
  5. Stay True to You: Goals that align with your values are easier to stick to. Think about what really matters to you and let that guide your plans.

With thoughtful goals in place, 2025 can be a year filled with purpose and progress.

Advocates for child protection have urged the government to implement stringent safety measures to prevent stampedes at events with large gatherings.

They expressed these concerns to journalists in Ibadan while reacting to the December 18, 2024, stampede at a children’s funfair held at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan.

Oyo State Coordinator of the Child Protection Network, CPN, Dr Rosemary Odigbo, commiserated with the victims’ families and emphasized key measures such as pre-registering beneficiaries, involving relevant groups in selection processes, decentralizing distribution locations, and enforcing robust safety protocols and crowd control measures.

Dr Odigbo urged the establishment of an independent committee to investigate the stampede.

She stated, “An independent committee should be established to investigate the causes of the stampede. Their focus will include examining event planning, crowd control measures, and safety protocols. Findings from the investigation should be made public and measures put in place to prevent a recurrence of such tragedies. Expanding distribution sites across the city to decentralize gatherings, separate queues or dedicated time slots for pregnant women, the elderly, and children to ensure their safety during events.”

She also stressed the need for the government to prioritize child safety policies, food security, community farming, food bank initiatives, and sustainable food systems as long-term solutions.

An orphanage operator, Mrs Kehinde Aiyeola, highlighted the importance of proper planning and event management, warning that good intentions could become futile without adequate preparation.

Child Rights advocate, Mrs. Ibukunoluwa Otesile, called for Nigerians to prioritize child protection issues and recommended introducing emergency management education in schools to mitigate potential disasters.

She also urged the Oyo State House of Assembly, OYHA,  to enact laws regulating large gatherings to prevent similar incidents.

An executive of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria, FOMWAN in Oyo State, Dr Lateefat Dairo clarified that the advocacy aims to promote orderliness and contentment during such events rather than assigning blame for the Ibadan stampede.
