The Lagos State Government has urged governments at all levels and well-meaning Nigerians to rise in support of widows of the nation’s fallen heroes, particularly in helping them shoulder family responsibilities and raise their children into responsible adults.

The call aims to prevent children who lose breadwinners from slipping into neglect and becoming vulnerable to criminal exploitation and violent activities.

The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Obafemi Hazmat, made the appeal at the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day Dedicated Jumat Service held in Ikeja, Lagos.

Dr Hazmat praised the nation’s Armed Forces for their sacrifices in protecting lives and property but expressed concern over the growing use of young people as agents of crime, especially in banditry and other anti-social activities.

He stressed that parents must take greater responsibility for the proper upbringing of their children, warning that poor home training fuels youth restiveness and insecurity.

According to him, responsible family planning—having only the number of children parents can adequately train and care for—would significantly reduce youth involvement in crime and anti-social behaviour.

The deputy governor again called on relevant agencies and compassionate Nigerians to support widows of fallen security personnel, stressing that caring for the children left behind remains a national duty.

In his opening remarks, the Lead Imam of the Lagos Secretariat Community Central Mosque, Alausa Ikeja, Dr. Sa’eid Ahmad, urged Nigerians to actively support government efforts to tackle insecurity.

Dr. Ahmad noted that criminals emerge from communities and insisted that if residents commit to identifying and isolating bad elements in their midst, the nation would be safer.

He also commended the Armed Forces for their sacrifices and dedication to national security.

The service concluded with special prayers for Nigeria and for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, asking for divine guidance in steering the nation in the right direction.

The Silent Trap of Chasing Money

At the beginning of a new year, many people reset their goals, redraw their plans, and recommit to “making it big.”

Most of those resolutions, if we’re honest, revolve around money—earning more, spending better, building wealth faster.

There’s nothing wrong with that.

Money is important. It opens doors, solves problems, and creates opportunities.

But when money becomes the only thing driving us, it quietly becomes a dangerous master.

When wealth is the sole motivation, values begin to bend.

Integrity becomes optional.

Conscience gets muted.

People become stepping stones rather than fellow humans.

In that desperate chase, it becomes easy to justify cutting corners, telling lies, exploiting others, or compromising deeply held principles—just to “get ahead.”

A Timeless Warning We Often Ignore

Jesus gave a sobering reminder that cuts through all the noise:

“A man’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” (Luke 12:15)

That statement is both liberating and provocative.

It challenges the popular belief that success can be measured by bank balances, assets, or status symbols.

It forces us to ask an uncomfortable question: If everything I own disappears today, what is left of me?

Lives That Prove Money Isn’t the Measure

History and everyday life are filled with examples that prove this truth.

Take Mother Teresa, for instance.

She owned almost nothing by the world’s standards. No estates. No luxury. No impressive personal wealth.

Yet her life continues to inspire generations across cultures and religions.

Why?

Because she poured herself into loving the unloved—touching lepers, caring for the dying, and restoring dignity to people society had discarded.

By financial metrics, she had little.

By eternal and human standards, she was immeasurably rich.

Or consider Nelson Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison.

Those were years that could have been spent building wealth, advancing a career, or accumulating comfort.

Instead, he emerged with forgiveness in his heart rather than bitterness, choosing reconciliation over revenge.

That decision shaped a nation and earned him global respect.

His greatness was not rooted in possessions but in character.

Everyday Heroes Among Us

Closer to home, we all know people who may not have much materially, yet they live full, meaningful lives.

The teacher who pours into students despite modest pay.

The parent who sacrifices personal comfort to raise children with values.

The neighbor who shows up consistently with kindness, honesty, and compassion.

These lives remind us that tangible success is not always loud, flashy, or wealthy—but it is deeply impactful.

When Wealth Fails To Deliver Fulfillment

On the other hand, we also see the opposite.

People with money, influence, and status who are perpetually restless, insecure, and unfulfilled.

They keep chasing the next deal, the next upgrade, the next validation—yet peace remains elusive.

Because money can buy comfort, but it cannot purchase purpose.

It can fund pleasure, but it cannot guarantee peace.

A Fresh Perspective for A New Beginning

As you step into this New Year, this is a powerful moment to adopt a fresh outlook and a healthier perspective.

Set financial goals, yes—but don’t let money define your worth or dictate your ethics.

Let purpose lead.

Let values guide ambition.

Let integrity set the boundaries of your pursuit.

Measure success not only by what you accumulate, but by who you become.

Ask yourself: Am I kinder? More honest? More compassionate? More useful to others than I was last year?

Because at the end of the journey, what you contribute and the lives you touch will speak louder than what you own.

The Better Way to Live

In your pursuit of a good life, don’t lose your humanity.

Be a good human.

Be genuine.

When money follows purpose, it becomes a tool.

When purpose follows money, it often becomes a trap.

There is a timeless truth that echoes across cultures, religions, and generations: what goes around comes around. It is more than a proverb; it is a principle that quietly governs human interactions. The energy, intentions, and actions we put into the world often find their way back to us—sometimes in unexpected ways.

Doing good should not be conditional. It should not depend on who is watching, what we stand to gain, or how favorable the situation appears. Whether we are dealing with an adult or a child, a woman or a man, a stranger or a close friend, goodness should remain our default response.

Goodness Beyond Convenience

It is easy to be kind when circumstances are comfortable. The real test of character, however, is how we act when kindness is inconvenient.

Consider a commuter who stops to help an elderly person cross a busy road, even though it means arriving late for work. Or a market trader who returns extra change to a customer who did not notice the mistake. In those moments, there may be no applause or immediate reward, yet such acts strengthen the moral fabric of society.

As Mahatma Gandhi famously said:

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

Goodness practiced consistently becomes a compass, guiding our decisions even in morally complex situations.

Everyday Illustrations of the Ripple Effect

The principle of reciprocity often unfolds subtly:

  • A teacher who patiently encourages a struggling child may unknowingly inspire a future leader.
  • A kind word offered to someone battling unseen struggles can become the reason they choose hope over despair.
  • A small act of generosity—buying a meal for someone in need—can set off a chain reaction of kindness that extends far beyond that single moment.

Like ripples in water, good deeds rarely stop where they begin. They travel outward, touching lives we may never meet.

The writer Ralph Waldo Emerson captured this idea succinctly:

“You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late.”

Goodness as a Universal Standard

Doing good should not be selective. Society often draws lines—age, gender, status, ethnicity—but goodness recognizes no such boundaries. A child deserves respect just as much as an adult. A woman’s dignity is as important as a man’s. Every human being, by virtue of existence, is worthy of compassion.

When goodness becomes the norm rather than the exception, communities grow stronger. Trust deepens. Conflicts reduce. Even when goodness is not immediately reciprocated, it retains its value.

As Martin Luther King Jr. reminded us:

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”

The Reward of Doing Good

The reward for doing good does not always come in the form we expect. Sometimes it is peace of mind. Other times, it is support that appears when we need it most. And occasionally, it is the quiet satisfaction of knowing we chose integrity over indifference.

Goodness has a way of returning—if not directly, then through transformed relationships, improved communities, and a clearer conscience.

Final Reflection

In a world often driven by self-interest and instant gratification, choosing to do good is a radical act. Yet it is one of the simplest ways to leave a lasting impact.

Do good, not because you expect a reward, but because it is the right thing to do. In time, life has a way of honoring that choice. What goes around, truly, comes around.

Former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has described the death of Bayelsa State Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo as shocking and a major loss to the state.

Dr. Jonathan made the remarks during a condolence visit to Bayelsa State Governor Senator Douye Diri and the Ewhrudjakpo family at Government House, Yenagoa.

The former president said the news of Senator Ewhrudjakpo’s death came as a shock, describing his passing as tragic and painful for Bayelsa State.

A former Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State himself, Dr. Jonathan described the late deputy governor as a humble public servant who demonstrated commitment to duty and contributed meaningfully to the development of the state.

Responding, Governor Diri thanked the former president for being the first national figure to formally commiserate with the Bayelsa State Government and the Ewhrudjakpo family.

The governor described the late deputy governor as a close friend and brother, noting that they had worked together in the service of Bayelsa State for about 14 years.

Governor Diri then cautioned against the politicisation of the deputy governor’s death, stating that he had ordered an autopsy to establish the cause.

After the condolence visit, Dr. Jonathan and Governor Diri also visited the deputy governor’s wife, Mrs. Beatrice Ewhrudjakpo, at her residence within the Government House.

Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo reportedly died last Thursday after collapsing in his office while preparing for an official engagement.

He was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, where doctors pronounced him dead.

Policymakers, activists, traditional leaders, and development partners have called for technology-driven action to eliminate female genital mutilation, FGM, describing it as a persistent human rights violation that demands scalable, innovative solutions.

The call dominated a multi-sectoral symposium in Ibadan held as part of activities marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

The event, themed “Leveraging Technology to End Gender-Based Violence,” took place at the Oyo State Local Government Training Centre, Government Secretariat, Agodi.

Delivering the keynote address, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Mrs Toyin Balogun, said FGM remains both a public health emergency and a gross violation of women’s rights despite progress in legislation and advocacy.

“While progress has been made through legislation and advocacy, the deep-rooted cultural beliefs sustaining FGM require smarter, more scalable interventions. Technology offers us unprecedented tools for education, reporting, and support,” she said.

Mrs. Balogun commended collective efforts that have reduced FGM prevalence in Oyo State from 68 percent to 18 percent, describing the development as evidence of the effectiveness of coordinated action.

Also speaking, UNFPA Gender/FGM Analyst for the South West, Mrs Uzoma Ayodeji, said Nigeria remains one of the countries with the highest number of FGM cases globally, with notable prevalence in several states, including parts of Oyo.

“Technology can bridge gaps in data collection, real-time monitoring, and access to sexual and reproductive health services for survivors,” she said.

Earlier, Director of the Centre for Comprehensive Promotion of Reproductive Health (CCPRH), Emeritus Professor Oladosu Ojengbede, presented a draft action plan to the commissioner.

He explained that the proposal outlines a coordination framework, a Ministry/SGBVRT-led technical review, and pathways for integrating digital platforms into both review and implementation.

“We must ensure that technology does not only gather data but triggers action and accountability,” Professor Ojengbede said.

Traditional institutions and community-based organisations at the symposium pledged to intensify awareness campaigns using WhatsApp groups and other digital platforms to amplify anti-FGM messaging.

Participants drawn from the health, education, justice, and traditional sectors also examined integrated approaches to prevention, reporting, and survivor support.

The symposium was organised by the Oyo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Inclusion in collaboration with CCPRH, with support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

As the 16 Days of Activism continue, Oyo State has positioned itself as a leading force in the fight against gender-based violence, leveraging innovation, collaboration, and sustained political commitment.

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has unveiled a new round of financial empowerment for persons with disabilities, PWDs, in Oyo State under the nationwide Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Economic Empowerment Programme, held to mark the 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

The event, held at the Local Government Training School, Secretariat, Ibadan, took place simultaneously across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

A total of 250 persons with disabilities in Oyo State received ₦200,000 each as business recapitalization grants, while the state also received a ₦50 million support fund for wider distribution within its disability community.

Represented in Ibadan by the wife of the Oyo State governor, Chief Tamunominini Makinde, Senator Tinubu said the initiative demonstrated the government’s commitment to building an economy that gives every Nigerian a sense of belonging.

“Our nation grows stronger when every individual is empowered to contribute meaningfully,” she said.

She announced that 9,500 persons with disabilities nationwide would receive a total of ₦1.9 billion, describing it as one of the largest empowerment interventions targeted at Nigerians with disabilities.

Quoting American disability rights advocate Helen Keller, she added, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much. A truly inclusive society is built when we stand together and create opportunities that empower everyone to contribute their unique gifts.”

Senator Tinubu emphasised that the programme aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises inclusive growth, social protection, and sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable Nigerians.

She highlighted earlier RHI interventions, noting that more than 100,000 petty traders and small business owners, including persons with disabilities, had received direct cash grants over the past two years.

“Our Social Investment Programmes have supported victims of floods, communal clashes, disasters, the elderly, widows, and orphans of our fallen heroes,” she said. “Through our Monthly Food Outreach Scheme, food items have been delivered to 22 states and the FCT. We remain committed to doing even more.”

She further announced that the RHI Governing Board had approved that the Economic Empowerment Programme for Persons with Disabilities will now hold annually on December 3.

Senator Tinubu also expressed appreciation to Governor Seyi Makinde and his wife, Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde, for their continued support for disability inclusion.

In his welcome address, Director-General of the Oyo State Agency for Persons with Disabilities, Mr. Ayodele Adekanmbi, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to inclusive governance.

“Today reminds us that disability is not inability. Every individual, regardless of physical or cognitive differences, possesses immense value,” he said.

He noted that the state maintains a deliberate quota system across education, health, employment, infrastructure, and social welfare to prevent the marginalisation of persons with disabilities.

“The Agency for Persons with Disabilities remains a hub for policy implementation, empowerment, and advocacy. Our goal is a state where every person can thrive without barriers,” Mr. Adekanmbi added.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr. Kayode Lawal thanked the First Lady and the government for the support, promising that recipients would use the funds responsibly to grow their businesses and improve their livelihoods.
