For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.

And for four staff members of the Administration Department of FRCN, Ibadan Zonal Station, it is time to rest after years of active service.

The retirement party, organised for Mrs Funmilayo Akinwunmi, Mrs Mercy Adebiyi, Mrs Ebunola Daniels and Mrs Mary Ogunleye was held at Studio One, Broadcasting House, Oba Adebimpe Road, Dugbe, Ibadan.

In an address of welcome, Assistant Director, Administration, Mrs Oluyemi Dada, said the event was put together to appreciate the retiring staff.

In a remark, Zonal Director, Radio Nigeria Ibadan, Mr Olufemi Fulani, appreciated the celebrants and their families for their tenacity while in service.

“Working in a media organisation as a secretary for 35 yrs is not a child’s play, most importantly, I appreciate your family members for their support during your service years, I congratulate you all”.

Going down memory lane, the Zonal Director noted he worked closely with three of the celebrants, whom he described as hardworking and diligent.

Mr Fulani enjoined the celebrants to uphold the principle of confidentiality that secretaries were known for, as they bow out of service.

Some colleagues of the retired officers at the programme, including Mrs Eunice Atere of the Administration department, poured encomiums on all the celebrants.

She says, “Mrs Funmilayo Akinwunmi is a mother, always willing to help, all the celebrants are role models to all other secretaries in the corporation”.

In their separate remarks, Mrs Funmilayo Akinwunmi, who appreciated God for making her witness the event, noted that there were dark days in the early years of her profession, but God saw her through. Mrs Akinwunmi maintained that she couldn’t perform her motherly role effectively, but with the help of her husband, she scaled through.

“There were times I get home very late at night, my husband would have made noodles for my children and they go to bed before getting home”. “I remembered a particular situation that I was denied promotion, I felt sad because I felt I didn’t deserve it as a hardworking staff”.

For Mrs Mary Ogunleye, it was a celebration of life as she recounted how she came face to face with death during her years in service.

“I was sick for years, got to the point of death, that I am here today is a testimony of God’s blessing, and I do not take it for granted”, said Mrs Ogunleye.

Mrs Ebunoluwa Daniels and Mrs Mercy Adebiyi were full of gratitude to God and described the event as a landmark in their lives.

“Words can’t express the way I am feeling, it is a thing of joy, my heart is full of gratitude to God”, said Mrs Daniels.

Mrs Adebiyi says it was not an easy ride as the job could be overwhelming, “there were times I felt like leaving the job, but thankfully, God was there for me”.

Responding on behalf of the retirees, Mrs Funmilayo Akinwunmi appreciated the Admin department for putting the programme together and encouraged those in service to keep the flag flying.

Highlights of the occasion were the presentation of gifts to the retirees and group photographs.

In attendance were family members of the celebrants, well- wishers, committee of management, members of the Admin department, as well as members from other departments in the corporation.

Fathers are gifts to humanity and should not be taken for granted.

The General Overseer of World Outreach Revival Center, WOREC, Adegbayi, Ibadan, Apostle Peter Akanji, stated this in a message marking this year’s Father’s Day celebration.

Apostle Akanji urged children to acknowledge and appreciate their biological and spiritual fathers for the roles they play in their lives.

The cleric decried a situation where some children remember their fathers only when they have problems, stressing the need for continuous appreciation and support.

Speaking on the theme, “The Godly Man,” Apostle Akanji noted that when men know God personally, there would be a drastic reduction in crime and a positive transformation in the country.

He urged fathers to lead their families by example, bear their responsibilities without grudges, remain transparent, protect their families and uphold integrity.

Also speaking, the Assistant Pastor in Charge of The Word, An Eye Opener International Ministry, Agbofieti, Apata, Ibadan, Pastor Peter Abraham, advised fathers to create a safe and supportive environment where children can freely share their challenges and concerns without fear.

Preaching from Ephesians Chapter Six Verse Four, Pastor Abraham explained that a father’s authority works best when it reflects God’s authority.

He noted that provoking children could lead to frustration, bitterness and rebellion, urging fathers to guide their children towards God rather than merely imposing rules on them.

Some fathers who spoke at the event expressed gratitude to God for the gift of life and described fatherhood as a responsibility-filled role both in the family and society.

They also appealed to governments at all levels to intensify efforts towards securing the release of the students and teachers abducted last month in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Similarly, the Vicar of Saint Anne’s Church, Molete, Ibadan, and Archdeacon of Molete Archdeaconry, the Venerable Babatunde Obaweya, admonished men to invest in their wives, mothers and daughters to bring out the best in them.

The Venerable Obaweya said many homes are in crisis because men have failed to invest in the women in their families.

Tracing the origin of Father’s Day, he explained that the celebration was inspired by Sonora Dudd, who sought to honour her father, a soldier who single-handedly raised her and her five siblings after the death of their mother.

According to the cleric, Sonora rallied churches and communities to celebrate fathers in 1908, while the observance was formally celebrated in the United States in 1910.

Highlights of the celebration included presentations by Sunday School children and the presentation of gifts to fathers by the church.

Economic hardship and growing security concerns appeared to cast a dark shadow over the Eid-el-Kabir celebration in Ibadan, as major relaxation centres and shopping malls recorded unusually low patronage during what is traditionally one of the busiest festive periods of the year.

A visit by Radio Nigeria correspondents to popular fun spots across the Oyo State capital revealed scanty crowds, quiet walkways and near-empty amusement sections, with only a few families and children seen trying to savour the holiday atmosphere.

At the popular Palms Mall in the Ring Road area of Ibadan, only a handful of children accompanied by their parents were seen at the amusement park section.

One of the amusement park operators, who identified himself simply as Richie, lamented the poor turnout despite efforts to attract customers with gifts and incentives.

However, the manager of another amusement stand in the mall, Ayooluwa Adeleke, expressed satisfaction with the level of patronage at his section.

Some toy vendors around the mall were, however, seen making brisk business as parents purchased items for their children.

The situation was similar at Cocoa Mall in Dugbe and Iris Mall in Apata, where only a few fun seekers were seen shopping or moving around the facilities.

Some children who spoke with Radio Nigeria expressed appreciation to their parents for bringing them out to celebrate and relax.

A parent, Mrs Adesewa Farinde, thanked God for witnessing another Eid-el-Kabir celebration, explaining that she decided to bring her children out to relax ahead of school resumption on Friday.

Other parents, who preferred anonymity, appealed to government at all levels to intensify efforts at strengthening security across the country as schools prepare to resume.

The usually bubbling Ventura Mall along Sango-UI Road, Samonda, also witnessed low turnout of visitors during the celebration.

One of the visitors, Miss Aishat Lawal, said although Eid-el-Kabir comes once in a year and deserved celebration, many people might have stayed away because of the harsh economic situation and insecurity in the country.

At Agodi Gardens, a recreation centre often packed with excited fun seekers during festive periods, the atmosphere was noticeably quiet and less vibrant.

Two parents, Mr Alimi Balogun and Hajiya Hauwa Usman, said they visited the facility to ease stress despite the prevailing economic challenges, lamenting that the recent increase in the price of cooking gas and other essentials had further worsened the burden on families.

Popular Nollywood actor, Alex Ekubo, is dead.

His death was confirmed on Tuesday 12th of May, 2026, by his colleagues, Funke Akindele, Bolanle Ninalowo, and Godwin Nnadiekwe, who claimed to be his ally.

Sharing on her Instagram story, Akindele wrote, “Hmmmmmm. Rest in peace, Alex. I tried to reach out to see you one more time, but I guess you knew best. May your kind soul rest in peace, Alex. ‘Ore mi like you fondly called me, I will always remember and cherish the good times we shared together. Rest in Peace, Alex.”

Meanwhile, Ninalowo, who is now in the United States, also mourned on his page, writing, “Rest on, Alex. May God heal your family and us all.”

Nnadiekwe, on the other hand, shared, “I’m struggling to find the words. This news has truly broken me. Nollywood has lost a rare soul, and I’m lost for words because this wasn’t the plan, Alex Ekubo. To think you already prepared your Will — It’s heartbroken, I can’t quite describe. Rest well, my friend.”

As of the time of filing this report, his family has not issued a statement on his death.

Recall that, fans across social media recently expressed concerns for Ekubo following his first public appearance after months of social media silence.

The light-skinned movie star had been absent from Instagram since December 30, 2024, sparking speculation about his well-being.

However, a recent video that surfaced online brought him back into the spotlight, though it also raised further questions.

In the viral clip, Ekubo was seen interacting with a group of children, appearing noticeably slimmer and subdued.

The video, posted by user @AsakyGRN on X (formerly Twitter), was captioned, “Alex Ekubo spotted for the first time since disappearing from social media.”

The footage triggered a wave of emotional reactions from fans, many of whom noted a significant change in his appearance and questioned his wellbeing.

Before the demise of the 40 year old actor, he  dismissed marriage in favour of his quest to earn more money in the film industry.

In January 2023, his then-lover, Fancy Acholonu, in an interview, revealed that she dated the late actor for five years without them having any intimacy.

The US-based model also called off her wedding to Ekubo in December 2021, after apologising to the film star a year later for calling it off.

Acholonu affirmed her love for the actor, saying that “like our shirt says, Nothing makes sense when we’re apart @alexxekubo you still have my heart.

“I miss you, I love you, and I’m truly sorry for all the hurt & pain you and your family went through with our breakup.”

She noted that her actions were out of character, and she has realised she could have controlled her emotions and not been so overreactive.

However, in a post on his Instagram page, Ekubo implied that he was aware that some people were curious about why he has not yet been married.

The film star said he was more interested in making money. He urged people not to bother about his marital status.

President Bola Tinubu says he has resolved to mark his 74th birthday with a low-key observance, citing the prevailing national mood and ongoing challenges facing the country.

In a personally signed statement released on Sunday, Tinubu thanked Nigerians for their goodwill messages and support, while explaining his decision to keep the celebration subdued.

“Consistent with my tradition of marking my birthday in line with the mood of the nation, I resolved to observe this year’s birthday in a low-key manner,” Tinubu said.

The president thanked citizens across the country for their show of love, prayers and solidarity, noting that such support continues to strengthen his administration.

“Today, as I clock another year on the journey of life, I’m filled with joy and gratitude for the opportunity to serve this great nation.

“I want to take this moment to thank Nigerians for their messages, show of love and prayers on the occasion of my 74th birthday,” he said.

He also acknowledged individuals and groups who celebrated him publicly, including those who placed adverts in newspapers or paid for broadcast airtime.

“To those who have taken space in newspapers or paid for air time on radio and television to wish me well, I thank you immensely,” he added.

Tinubu thanked his wife, Oluremi Tinubu, and Vice President Kashim Shettima for their kind remarks.

Reflecting on the state of the nation, the president noted that while his administration has faced significant challenges since the introduction of key reforms, there are emerging signs of progress.

“As I mark this special day, I am reminded of the challenges we’ve faced since we initiated our reforms. I’m glad that our sacrifices have not been in vain, as we can see a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel,” he said.

He, however, acknowledged that recent global developments, particularly tensions in the Middle East, have posed setbacks.

Despite this, Tinubu emphasised that the gains recorded so far are the result of collective effort.

“The credit for the positive outcomes we have achieved does not belong solely to me… We achieved the gains together,” he said.

“We are determined to confront some of the challenges we face today, and with your continued support, we shall overcome,” he assured.

Tinubu called on Nigerians to remain united and committed to nation-building, adding, “Let us continue to work together to build a stronger, prosperous and more resilient nation that will make Nigeria the pride of Africa.”
