NURTW, RTEAN Fracas: One Dies As Govt. Suspends Union Indefinitely In Ondo
One person has been reportedly killed in the fight that broke out between two factions of the National Union Of Road Transport Workers, NURTW in Akure, Ondo State capital.
The deceased said to be a member of the union and identified as Shina was allegedly shot during the fracas.
Radio Nigeria gathered that the drivers were fighting over management of parks even after the Ondo state government had ordered the suspension of driver’s unions activities in the state.
The unionists this morning caused pandemonium around Oja Oba area, on Adesida Road by shooting sporadically while residents and traders scampered to safety.
This came barely 48hours after the factional unionists fought at Owode area of the state, injuring many people.
As at the time of filing this report, Vehicular movement and business activities around the area Oja oba, Adesida Road, Fiwasaye and Old garage have been brought to a halt as a result of the NURTW Fraca.
Ondo State Government has announced indefinite suspension of all activities of the NURTW across the state
Addressing Government House Correspondents, the Senior Special Assistant to the governor on Special Duties and strategy, Dr Doyin Odebowale also ordered the NURTW members to vacate all motor parks across the state immediately
The government hinged its decision on what it described as unruly and uncultured behaviour of the union leaders which resulted to violent attacks on members and the innocent citizens
The government however, said the indefinite suspension did not affect RTEAN who comported themselves in a peaceful manner
The state government had earlier ordered the suspension of the activities of NURTW and RTEAN for two weeks over imminent power tussles among the union leaders where government warned against violence in any part of the state
Meanwhile, one of the members popularly called Tshaina had been killed during a clash this morning at a motor park in Akure.
