President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to approve a fresh external borrowing of $516,333,070 to fund sections of the proposed Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway, a flagship project under his administration’s infrastructure drive.

The request, contained in a letter addressed to the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, was read during plenary on Thursday, setting the stage for legislative consideration of the financing plan.

According to the President, the loan—expected to be sourced from Deutsche Bank—will support the construction of Sections 1, 1A and 1B of the 1,000-kilometre highway designed to link Nigeria’s North-West to the South-West corridor.

The letter partly read, “Specifically, approval is sought for the syndicated financing facility from Deutsche Bank in the total sum of US$516,333,007 for the execution of Sections 1, 1A, and 1B of the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway Project.

The inclusion of the said financing in the Federal Government’s borrowing plan, as earlier approved by the National Assembly. The Senate is invited to note that the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway is a flagship infrastructure initiative under the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

Providing further details, the President explained that the project would traverse Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos states, stretching from Illela to Badagry, and is expected to enhance connectivity and economic integration significantly.

“The project is designed to open up Nigeria’s northwest–southwest economic corridor through the construction of an approximately 1,000-kilometre high-capacity carriageway, linking Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos States, stretching from Illela to Badagry.

It is also expected to enhance north–south connectivity and road safety, improve network performance along the corridor, reduce logistics costs and travel time, facilitate trade and strengthen food security and promote national integration by linking production zones to markets and ports,” he stated.

Tinubu further disclosed that the financing structure includes a syndicated loan backed by a partial risk guarantee from the Islamic Corporation for the Insurance of Investment and Export Credit, while the Federal Government would provide counterpart funding of ₦265.5bn for land acquisition, compensation and related infrastructure.

He noted that the loan would run for nine years, including a grace period of up to three years, with an interest rate benchmarked at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange SOFR plus 5.3 per cent per annum.

The Federal Executive Council, he added, had already approved the financing arrangement. Tinubu, in the letter, urged the Senate to fast-track the request.

“I look forward to the expeditious consideration and approval of this request by the Senate. Please accept, Distinguished Senate President and Distinguished Senators, the assurances of my highest regards,” the statement added

On the floor of the Senate, lawmakers highlighted the economic significance of the project.

The senators also emphasised that large stretches of the highway cut across several states and would reduce travel time between Sokoto and Lagos from about 13 hours to six hours.

In his remarks, Akpabio aligned with the position, describing the project as a major economic game changer capable of saving lives and boosting national productivity.

He emphasised that borrowing for critical infrastructure is justified, particularly where such investments yield long-term economic benefits and can facilitate repayment through generated value.

The Senate President later referred the request to the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, directing it to report back within one week.

Akpabio also urged the panel to expedite its review to enable timely consideration of the loan request.

Federal Road Safety Corps in Ogun State has advised motorists to reduce speed and exercise patience when approaching potholes on highways to avoid preventable crashes during the rainy season.

The Ogun Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr Oludare Ogunjobi, who advised newsmen in Ota, said the advice became necessary to remind motorists that wet roads are slippery and that speed makes it difficult to control vehicles, especially during the rainy season.

He urged motorists to maintain a distance of at least twice that of the car ahead to allow for extra braking time.

“The FRSC is appealing to motorists to apply common-sense speed limits by reducing their speed below the posted limit when it rains.

Also, motorists should focus on extreme caution and proactive vehicle maintenance to prevent unnecessary loss of lives,” he said.

He advised all drivers to check worn-out tyres and ensure that their vehicles are weather-ready by inspecting essential components such as windscreen wipers before embarking on any trip.

“The FRSC is appealing to motorists to apply common-sense speed limits by reducing their speed below the posted limit when it rains.

“Also, motorists should focus on extreme caution and proactive vehicle maintenance to prevent unnecessary loss of lives,” he said.

He advised all drivers to check worn-out tyres and ensure that their vehicles are weather-ready by inspecting essential components such as windscreen wipers before embarking on any trip.

He also urged drivers to replace worn-out wiper blades immediately to maintain clear visibility on the road.

Mr Ogunjobi emphasised the need for motorists to ensure that all headlamps, brake lights, braking systems and indicators are functioning properly to stay safe during heavy rain.

He also enjoined motorists to stay away from flood-prone areas and avoid crossing running water or flooded roads to prevent crashes during the rainy season.

The sector commander further advised motorists to park safely off the road and wait for the rain to subside if it becomes too heavy, reducing visibility.

He said that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency in April predicted a variable rainfall pattern for the year, with Ogun expected to experience a longer rainy season, stressing the need for caution, noting that recent alerts from the Federal Ministry of Environment also highlighted Ogun as one of the states at risk of heavy rainfall and flash flooding during the period.

If you’ve ever wondered what makes your car actually stop when you press the brake pedal, the answer is a little liquid called brake fluid.

It might not get the fame of engine oil, but without it, your car wouldn’t slow down—simple as that.

Think of brake fluid as the blood of your braking system.

Push the pedal, and this fluid carries the force all the way to your brake pads and discs so your wheels obey.

Ignore it, and you could be driving on “spongy” brakes—or worse, nothing at all.

What Kind of Brake Juice Is in Your Car?

Not all brake fluids are the same.

Using the wrong type is like trying to put diesel in a petrol car—bad idea.

Here’s a quick guide:

  • DOT 3 – The classic choice for older cars. Glycol-based (sounds fancy, but it just means water-friendly).
  • DOT 4 – Slightly fancier and hotter-resistant than DOT 3. Good for newer cars.
  • DOT 5 – Silicone-based; doesn’t mix with the others. Often used in old-school classics.
  • DOT 5.1 – Like DOT 5 in performance, but compatible with DOT 3/4 systems.

Pro tip: Never mix silicone DOT 5 with the others. It’s a recipe for brake disaster.

How Often Should You Change It?

Brake fluid doesn’t last forever—it absorbs water from the air over time, which makes it less effective (like a soggy sponge).

  • Normal cars: Change every 2 years.
  • Heavy-duty or city drivers: Every 1 year is safer. Considering the length of journeys, lots of traffic, climbing and going down hills, or towing.

Even if your car has a warning light for brake fluid, it’s still smart to check it manually now and then.

Easy Ways to Keep Your Brake Fluid Happy

  • Check the level: There’s a little reservoir under the hood with “MIN” and “MAX” marks. Keep it in the middle.
  • Seal it tight: Air = moisture. Moisture = weaker brakes.
  • Use the right type: Your owner’s manual will tell you which DOT number your car needs.
  • Flush, don’t just top up: Old fluid is dirty and full of water. Flush the system entirely when you change it.
  • Look for leaks: If your car leaves little puddles under the wheel or master cylinder, that’s trouble.

What Happens if You Ignore It

Skipping brake fluid care is like ignoring your car’s heartbeat:

  • Spongy brakes – Pedal feels soft, like stepping on a marshmallow.
  • Brake fade – Hard braking could fail because the fluid boils and turns to vapour.
  • Rust monsters – Moisture in old fluid can corrode callipers and ABS parts.
  • Danger zone – Reduced stopping power = higher chance of accidents.

5.     Takeaways

  • Treat brake fluid like your car’s lifeblood.
  • Change it every 1–2 years, depending on your driving style.
  • Always check levels, seals, and use the right type.
  • Remember: brake fluid is toxic and corrosive—avoid spills on skin or paint.

Next time you hop in your car, thank your brake fluid for being the unsung hero keeping you safe on the road.

Brake Fluid Cheat Sheet: Keep Your Car Stopping Safely!

Know Your Types

Brake FluidEveryday TipTech Speak
DOT 3Classic, old-school carsGlycol-based, absorbs water
DOT 4Modern cars, hotter brakesGlycol-based, higher boiling point
DOT 5Vintage/classic carsSilicone-based, won’t mix with others
DOT 5.1High-performance, newer carsGlycol-based, works with DOT 3/4

Tip: Never mix DOT 5 (silicone) with the others. It’s like putting orange juice in your petrol tank.

Change It Before It Changes You

  • Every 2 years – average car.
  • Every 1 year – city driving, hills, towing, or heavy traffic.
  • Moisture = weaker brakes. Old fluid = dangerous.

3      Quick Daily/Weekly Checks

  • Keep fluid between MIN & MAX.
  • Seal the reservoir to keep moisture out.
  • Flush completely instead of topping up with old fluid.
  • Watch for leaks under the wheels or master cylinder.

4      What Happens if You Don’t

SymptomWhat it feels likeWhy it happens
Spongy brakesPedal feels soft like a marshmallowMoisture lowers braking efficiency
Brake fadeCar takes longer to stop under heavy brakingMoisture in fluid attacks callipers, cylinders
Rusty brakesParts corrode silentlyMoisture in fluid attacks calipers, cylinders
Danger zoneHigher accident riskReduced braking power

5      Quick Takeaways

  • Brake fluid = your car’s lifeblood
  • Change regularly, don’t ignore warning lights
  • Use the right type
  • Handle carefully; it’s toxic & corrosive

Pro tip: Brake fluid is your car’s lifeline rope—when the road gets steep or slippery, it’s what stops a dangerous fall!

Some commercial mini-bus drivers in Osogbo, Osun State, on Wednesday, staged a protest over the recent hike in petroleum prices.

The drivers, who converged on the Olaiya Flyover, Osogbo, prevented other mini-bus drivers from conveying passengers during the protest.

Radio Nigeria reports that the protest, which occurred between 8 and 10 o’clock in the morning, caused gridlock at Olaiya, Oja Oba and Ota Efun areas of the State.

One of the drivers, Mr Ajayi Fatai, said all their earnings were being spent on fuel.

Mr Fatai said the protest was to raise awareness on the need to review transport fares and for commuters to bear with them.

Another protesting driver, Mr Mufutau Ajani, said the government’s daily ticket charges were also an issue affecting their operation, therefore, introducing a new transport fare was the only way to cushion the effects of the fuel price increase on their business.

Reacting to the incident, the state Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Sesan Oyedele said that a meeting would be held with the representatives of the drivers and the union to find a lasting solution to the issue.

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has said his administration has completed 16 out of the 22 road projects it has embarked upon in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area since its inception six years ago.

The governor disclosed this in Ijebu-Ode at the inauguration of the Awokoya, Igbeba-Yidi Road.

He said his government took an interest in the roads because of their importance to the socio-economic life of the people and to stop the yearly loss of lives, particularly on the Yidi Road.

The governor, who reiterated his commitment to the fair and equitable distribution of developmental projects in all sections of the state, noted that as the state helmsman, his job was to ensure all-round development of the state.

He said that with the recent hosting of the National Sports Festival, the state has grown from being the industrial capital, the education capital, and the sports capital to become the cultural capital of Nigeria, attributing this to the ‘can-do’ spirit of the people of the state.

While assuring the people of Ijebuland that this year’s Ojude Oba Festival would be eventful, Governor Abiodun stated that his administration has elevated it to international standards.

Former Deputy Governor of the state,  Mrs Yetunde Onanuga, in her goodwill message, said the road had been in very bad shape over the years, causing motorists to undergo traumatic experiences. She appreciated the governor for coming to their rescue, adding that he has carried out many infrastructural developments in Ijebu-Ode and its environs.

The member representing Ijebu-Ode, Odogbolu, and Ijebu North East Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, Hon. Olufemi Ogunbamwo, noted that six years of Governor Abiodun’s administration have brought tremendous socio-economic development to Ijebu-Ode and Ogun State, saying the road project was an indication that the present administration is people-oriented.

The Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, lauded the governor for the even distribution of projects across the state, which he said was unprecedented, and commended him for being good to the state workers.

The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr Ade Akinsanya noted that the roads were in a deplorable condition and prone to flooding, stating that with their reconstruction, residents of the area would heave a sigh of relief.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Osun State Sector Command, has issued a two-week ultimatum to owners of unregistered vehicles and motorcycles to comply with registration requirements or face a coordinated crackdown.

The Sector Commander, Mr. Leye Adegboyega, in a statement by the Sector Public Education Officer, Mrs. Agnes Ogungbemi, as part of activities marking the 8th United Nations Global Road Safety Week, raised concerns over the increasing number of unregistered and improperly registered vehicles plying roads in the state, particularly those with fake or dealer number plates.

Mr. Adegboyega noted that the situation poses serious security and economic threats, as such vehicles are often used for criminal purposes and contribute to massive revenue losses for the state.

He emphasised that many motorcycles under the guise of commercial operations were involved in illegal activities, with intelligence from security agencies supporting the claim.

He said FRSC would launch a joint enforcement operation with the Osun State Board of Internal Revenue and other relevant agencies at the end of the two-week ultimatum, targeting Osogbo and its environs.

Mr. Adegboyega also announced a renewed crackdown on dangerous driving, especially on highways and township roads, citing the deaths of 31 people in two days in February 2025 and the loss of six Osun State University students in March 2025, due to wrong-way driving.

To tackle this, the FRSC has extended its Special Intervention Patrols to various parts of the state, including the East and West Bypass in Osogbo and other key routes.

Reiterating the theme of the ongoing UN Road Safety Week – “Streets for Life: #MakeWalkingSafe, #MakeCyclingSafe” – Mr. Adegboyega called for collective action from the public and the media.

The Oyo State House of Assembly has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the activities of the state-owned Pace Setter Transport Services (PTS).

This decision was made after the House Committee on Transport presented its interim report, which revealed several concerns, including the lack of a legal framework guiding the operations of PTS.

The Committee, chaired by Mr. Babajide Adebayo, was given a two-week ultimatum to interface with PTS management and officials.

The report highlighted that the Sole Administrator, Dr. Salami Ibrahim, had recruited 106 additional staff without proper authorization.

The Deputy Speaker Mr. Muhammed Fadeyi countered the claim that PTS is an independent agency, stating that the House has the constitutional right to investigate any agency funded by taxpayers’ money.

Mr. Dele Adeola praised Governor Seyi Makinde for upgrading PTS to alleviate transportation costs following the fuel subsidy removal.

Reacting, the speaker, Mr. Adebo Ogundoyin, instructed the Committee to conduct a thorough investigation into PTS, focusing on staff auditing, operations, and finances, including state government subventions and revenue generation.

The Speaker also urged the executive arm to establish laws governing PTS through the Ministry of Justice.

“This investigation will also examine state government subventions to the Pacesetter Transport Services and the revenue generated by the company. This becomes imperative towards ensuring transparency and accountability in the operations of PTS.” Oyo Speaker said
