Political Scientist Calls For Strengthening Of Local Governments

Local government in Nigeria should be equipped, empowered and held accountable in delivering good governance to people at the grassroots.

A Political Scientist, Mr. Toye Alabi who stated this in an interview with Radio Nigeria in Oshogbo said the third tier of government is the closest to the people, therefore it is considered a most important facilitator of economic and social development especially at the grassroots.

Mr. Alabi explained that the duties of the Local Government Authorities was to foster grassroots support and participation in the general system of governance at the State and Federal level.

He added that Local Governments are responsible for the people’s security, maintenance of public infrastructures and institutions, regulation of economic policies, law and order maintenance and the welfare of the people in general hence the need to strengthen local administration.
