Eight persons have died in a lone accident involving a palm oil-laden truck that plunged into a ditch in the early hours of Saturday in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

Radio Nigeria gathered that the accident occurred around 2 am on Saturday when the truck was ascending the November 27 overhead bridge opposite NECO office.

It was gathered that the truck could not ascend the bridge and in the process of rolling back, the break failed which resulted in the driver losing control and the truck falling into the ditch.

When our correspondent visited the scene one of the survivors who did not mention his name said, they were about 50 that were involved in the accident.

However, an official report by the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Osun State Command, made available to Radio Nigeria indicated that 61 persons were involved in the lone accident.

According to the report, 36 people that sustained varying degree of injuries had been rushed to UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital and State Specialist Hospital in Asubiaro.

The report blamed the accident on overloading which restricted the truck from ascending the ramp, thereby rolling back and falling into the ditch.

The truck had been moved from the scene while other passengers numbering about 14 were still on ground to monitor the packing of kegs of palm oil that littered the road.
