The Nigerian constitution should be put up for review periodically to engender a better society.

The Chairman, Constitution Review Committee, and Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege made this known in Akure at the zonal public hearing on the proposed alteration to the provision of the 1999 constitution.

Represented Senator Omo-Agege argued that the 1999 constitution had forced on the nation some military decrees and policies.

He gave an assurance that the Senate committee on constitution review would consider submissions from the hearing without bias for judicial and democratic reform in Nigeria.

Also speaking, the speaker, Ondo State House of Assembly, ODHA, Mr. Bamidele Oleyeloogun and Ekiti State Deputy Speaker, Mr Akeem Jamiu maintained that the 1999 constitution was more of military decrees thereby depriving the nation of true federalism.

Declaring the event open, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu welcomed representatives from Ekiti and Osun States to the hearing and enjoined the Senate and the House of Representatives to put aside partisan politics for better Nigeria.

Governor Akeredolu who recommended the 1963 constitution where every region would have the power to develop advised the stakeholders to embrace sincerity throughout the exercise.

Both state and federal lawmakers at the public hearing were Senator Nicholas Tofowomo and his counterpart from Ekiti State, Senator Abiodun Olujimi.
